Overview

PPPL’s Engineering Design Analysis & CAD (DAC) Division is a multidisciplinary team focused on developing the engineering designs for and advancing the state‑of‑the‑art for magnetic confinement plasma physics research devices around the world. We specialize in high‑field magnets, diagnostics, and plasma facing components for nuclear fusion experiments at PPPL and collaborator facilities worldwide. The core competencies of the DAC Division include the design and implementation of high vacuum components and systems, high heat flux components, coupled electro‑mechanical systems in high EM flux environments, material science, metrology, and in‑vacuum motion devices.

PPPL is a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University. The laboratory tackles the world’s toughest science and technology challenges using plasma, the fourth state of matter. With more than 70 years of history, PPPL is a leader in the science and engineering behind the development of fusion energy, a potentially limitless energy source. PPPL is also advancing research in microelectronics, quantum sensors and devices, and sustainability sciences.

Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to contribute to our mission and vision.

This is a 6‑month term position.

For training and developmental purposes, assignments may include work that is typically performed at a higher level.

As the engineering staff member becomes proficient, the individual will perform duties more independently. Selected candidates may be assigned to work with research and engineering staff to design, fabricate, and deploy physics instrumentation on a fusion experiment at PPPL, the National Spherical Torus Experiment as well as assignments to other multiple engineering projects at PPPL.
  • Assignments usually include one or more of the following:
  • Design and development of equipment.
  • Test of materials.
  • Preparation of specifications and technical procedures.
  • Oversight of fabrication.
  • Inspections as well as testing and oversight of installation of components.
