Position: Electrician Apprentice for Experimental Power

Overview

Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Apprenticeship is the first‑in‑the‑nation registered apprenticeship program in fusion energy and engineering. It equips the next generation of technicians with the skills needed to build and operate fusion experiments. The Electrician Apprentice for Experimental Power position provides apprenticeship training and labor in support of AC power distribution equipment for experimental devices and systems.

Program details: 8,000 hours of on‑the‑job training (OJT) and 576 hours of classroom instruction (RTI) through Mercer County Technical School, leading to a nationally recognized credential. The apprenticeship pays and offers benefits.

Responsibilities
  • Work with the Lead Electrician to support installations, modifications, troubleshooting, and maintenance of AC power distribution equipment.
  • Assist in the installation, modification, troubleshooting, and maintenance of AC power distribution equipment up to 277/480 V, including cabling, conduit, cable tray, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, motor starters and VFDs.
  • Use measuring devices such as multimeters, insulation resistance testers (meggers), and dielectric withstand testers (hi‑potters).
  • Develop Bill of Materials (BOM) for electrical projects and perform receipt inspections for parts.
  • Follow safety practices: awareness of hazards, JHA, obtaining required permits, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
  • Adhere strictly to Lab safety policies:
    Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Electric Utilization Training (EUT), NEC and other NEC‑related training.
OJT Areas
  • Plan layout of construction installation, repairs and record keeping.
  • Installations/repairs.
  • Testing.
  • Inspections.
  • Repair electrical equipment.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years old and hold a high‑school diploma or equivalent by program start.
  • No prior experience required, but experience in construction, general labor or an industrial environment is a plus.
  • High‑school diploma / GED required.
  • Enrollment in an accredited Electrician Apprentice program or electrical trade school highly preferred.
  • Participation in related technical instruction (RTI) at Mercer County Technical School; prior coursework may be creditable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Reading and understanding technical drawings, power system one‑line diagrams, circuit schematics, control wiring diagrams, and general arrangement drawings.
  • Basic understanding of electrical principles, circuits, and safety practices.
  • Familiarity with common hand tools and power tools used in the electrical trade.
  • Commitment to safety protocols, especially LOTO and electrical safety.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Ability to work in various physical conditions (confined spaces, heights, varying temperatures).
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Certificates and Licenses
  • Real  Driver’s License.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification is a plus.
Physical Requirements
  • Work in awkward positions, narrow or confined spaces, bend, climb, lift or move up to 50 lb.
  • Climb ladders or stairs; comfortable with heights.
  • Frequent kneeling, bending, walking or standing for long periods.
Working Conditions
  • Fully on‑site; 40 hours per week.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $48,000 to $72,000. Benefits eligible:
