MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Core responsibilities, education and certification requirements for the Diagnostic Ultrasound Sonographer.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE- Graduate of a Medical Imaging program.
- Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
- Plan and perform imaging procedures to produce sonographic medical images for patient diagnosis or treatment.
- Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and maintain professional and technical competencies as required by the organization, accreditation and licensing bodies.
- Review physician request for procedure information and refer questions before performing the study.
- Produce optimal quality images and maintain confidentiality of Protected Health Information.
- Assess patient needs related to comfort, hygiene and range of motion and provide support accordingly.
- Educate patients regarding sonographic procedures by explaining the procedure and answering questions.
- Promote a team approach to radiology services by positively interacting with technical, support, nursing, residents and medical staff.
- Engage in problem solving, crisis management and system implementation to support efficient, high quality, cost-effective patient care.
- Act as a clinical instructor meeting quality standards of the sonography education program.
- Evaluate and document student clinical performance fairly and consistently in a timely manner according to educational program guidelines.
- Maintain professional development in sonographic imaging and techniques.
- Participate in in-house training and development offerings and apply resultant skills and knowledge to performance.
- Display imaging techniques, patient care and guest relation behaviors in accordance with ethical and administrative policies and regulations.
- Report equipment failures immediately upon identification.
- Perform high-level disinfection of ultrasound equipment per department policy.
- Differentiate various shades of gray on a black and white monitor or photograph.
- Stand and walk for six to seven hours a day.
- Lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Push ultrasound machine for portable exams.
Clinical setting.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES- Follow directions written and verbal in English.
- Work with people utilizing a teamwork approach.
- Prioritize work tasks and multi-task.
No experience required. All sonographers with less than 12 months of experience enter at Level one.
LEVEL 2Meets requirements for previous level. One year of sonographer experience. Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1, plus additional skill sets.
LEVEL 3Meets requirements for previous levels. One continuing education pathway. Three years of sonographer experience. Compliant in 3 leadership/supervisory skills. Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1, 2, 3, plus 3 additional skill sets.
LEVEL 4Meets requirements for previous levels. One continuing education pathway. Five years of sonographer experience. Compliant in 5 leadership/supervisory skills. Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1, 2, 3, 4 plus 4 additional skill sets.
