Job SummaryThe Peer Support Specialist will provide support to outpatient mental health clients who are engaged in mental health services, including clients who are discharged from subacute/residential mental health treatment or psychiatric hospitalization, clients with serious mental health issues, and those with higher risk with self-harm and suicidality. The Peer Support Specialist facilitates the development of recovery skills. The Peer Support Specialist provides opportunities for individuals to direct their own recovery process and support the learning and utilization of skills needed to foster recovery.
The Peer Support Specialist will be knowledgeable of available service options, will promote the utilization of natural support systems, will facilitate the development of a sense of wellness and self-worth, and will work with a treatment team to promote the goals of the person in services.
- Directs interactions with clients who are assigned to peer support services, and acts as a role model to clients to inspire hope and share life experiences as appropriate to the recovery process
- Telephone contacts to support clients who need assistance, are struggling, or are at risk of self-harm or making poor decisions; make reminder calls for assessments, groups, individual sessions, medication management appointments, and other Best Care services
- Transportation of clients to appointments when appropriate and approved; transports to/from acute care or mental health residential treatment to outpatient services; assists clients with access to benefits and may transport to Supported Employment appointments
- Identify clients’ abilities, strengths, and assets and help them recognize and use them
- Identify barriers to full participation and develop strategies to overcome them
- Monitor clients in residential/higher levels of care or incarceration to maintain connection with Crook outpatient mental health services
- Provide referrals to various services as appropriate (e.g., Food Bank, LINC, primary care, community college, parenting, etc.)
- Provide case management services as needed
- Attend program and staff meetings and supervision meetings
- Assist clinicians in groups at the office, jail, or other settings; provide back-up in groups and other treatment activities as needed
- Help clients develop and connect to community-based pro-social or wellness-oriented recovery activities
- Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic health system (EHS) within agency timelines
- Other related duties as assigned

- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality per HIPAA, 42 CFR, and Oregon Statutes
- Attend required meetings and complete training timely
- Keep required certifications and licenses current and renewed timely
- Work independently and as a positive, collaborative team member
- Perform other organizational duties as needed
- Knowledge of mental illness, substance-use disorder, disabilities, and recovery resources
- Ability to engage clients in mental health treatment services in a compassionate and supportive manner
- Proficiency with MS Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook), EHR platforms, databases, virtual meetings, internet, and ability to learn new software
- Ability to assess and manage crisis situations using verbal intervention skills to de-escalate crises, risk situations, and aggressive behaviors
