ABOUT USThe Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs is dedicated to ensuring a supportive, challenging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate living and learning environment for approximately 6,000 pre-college students coming from all 50 states and more than 70 countries. Brown’s Pre-College Programs offer high‑school students (13‑18 years old) the opportunity to study a wide range of liberal arts subjects that reflect the breadth of Brown’s undergraduate Open Curriculum while strengthening their connection to a robust community of peer scholars from around the world.
Students develop personal and social skills that are critical to success in the college setting and get a feel for what college life is like—responsibility, freedom, and new friendships.
A seasonal position with Brown’s Pre-College Programs offers an opportunity for staff members to gain practical experience in community development, workshop programming, social justice education, administrative tasks, and customer service. All positions allow staff members to hone leadership abilities and provide an opportunity to enhance supervision skills, along with many other transferable skills that prepare staff to excel in any future position.
The seasonal staff positions require an interest in working with college-bound high school students and engaging with them both intellectually and in a residential context. A successful staff member will have excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills; attention to detail; the ability to follow through with assignments, thrive in a constantly changing work environment, manage an irregular working schedule with some hours shifting on a weekly basis;
and work collaboratively as part of a team. Staff members are expected to approach their work with a positive attitude, energy, enthusiasm, flexibility, and an interest and ability to work with students and staff from different backgrounds and identities.
Ideal candidates will have a commitment to social justice and an ability to communicate with younger people, appreciating their developmental level, about critical topics. These positions require staff to display professionalism, maturity, and good judgment at all times. Staff are expected to be models for productive, inclusive, and engaged behavior for the pre‑college students enrolled in our programs.
Seasonal Staff Primary Responsibilities- Facilitate a vibrant student life experience for Pre-College participants that is developmental, memorable, and fun.
- Build and maintain a welcoming, safe, and inclusive student community while addressing student needs.
- Learn about the Pre-College programs to better support student success in and out of the classroom.
- Assist with staffing all‑campus programmatic events, including excursions, movie nights, activities fairs, and the college fair.
- Demonstrate acceptable standards of conduct within the residence hall and larger campus communities.
- Enforce Pre‑College policies and procedures for Pre‑College students, addressing participant behavior directly and ensuring proper documentation, communication, and accountability.
- Intervene with unsafe, inappropriate, or concerning behavior and ensure proper follow‑up and documentation.
- Provide developmental advising for participants and make appropriate referrals to colleagues or emergency support personnel as necessary.
- Respond quickly, thoroughly, and productively to ensure participants continue to trust the program’s ability to support them toward successful completion.
- Be visible, available, and approachable to support participants, families, and other support systems.
- Serve on a rotating on‑call schedule as part of a multi‑level crisis response team during the program. On‑call coverage spans daytime, evening, weekends, and holidays.
