Position OverviewProvidence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks exceptional per diem substitute teachers to join our community. We serve approximately 22,000 students at 37 schools. The role supports intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of students, especially in hard‑to‑fill subject areas.
Hard‑to‑Fill Areas- Science
- Math
- Special Education
- Bilingual Dual Language – Spanish
Three (3) day minimum commitment per week. Candidates should be willing to work at least three days per week.
SupervisionWorks under general supervision of the building principal or designee.
Illustrative Examples of Work Performed- Provide an atmosphere conducive to student development.
- Supervise students in various settings.
- Communicate with students and staff.
- Monitor use and care of equipment.
- Support academic, social‑emotional, and physical needs of all students.
- Advocate academically for students, model appropriate habits.
- Create a personalized, rigorous, socially engaging environment.
- Instruct students individually and in groups using lectures, discussions, demonstrations.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet student needs.
- Take safe precautions protecting students and facilities.
- Maintain standards of student behavior for positive learning environment.
- Work in designated hard‑to‑fill areas.
- Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree or junior status as an undergraduate.
- Prior experience working with school‑age children in a comparable role, demonstrating ability to support development.
- Three (3) day minimum commitment.

- Can work within an Aligned Instruction System including teaching a unified curriculum.
- Knowledge and skills to build positive relationships with diverse populations.
- Commitment to the mission and vision of PPSD.
- Complete new‑hire compliance training prior to first day.
- Proficiency with PC applications, Microsoft Office, email, web applications.
- Commit to work at least three days per week.
- Pass pre‑employment criminal history background check.
