Residential Tutor Counselor, Upward Bound Summer Program Position Overview
The Upward Bound Program at Rhode Island College is a federally funded program for rising 10, 11, and 12 grade college‑bound high school students. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the high school graduation, college‑going, and college graduation rates of program participants. We seek dedicated individuals to serve as Tutor Counselors, providing mentorship, supervision, and academic support to high school participants in a dynamic residential program.
Responsibilities- Participate in orientation and training from June 16 to June 27, including evenings.
- Supervise and mentor 7 to 10 students; support and uphold the Student Code of Conduct.
- Promote the use of conflict‑resolution strategies to tackle student issues.
- Tutor approximately 30 to 40 students in 2–3 assigned subject areas.
- Conduct weekly meetings with instructors to track student progress.
- Organize and document tutoring sessions; maintain accurate tutoring session records.
- Plan and execute diverse cultural and character‑building activities.
- Attend regular staff meetings and individual advisor check‑ins.
- Respond to routine and emergency situations as trained.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Attend and participate in weekly one‑on‑one meetings with the resident manager.
- Directly supervise a group of students on field trips including NYC.
- Maturity and responsible character to serve as a role model for students and team of tutor counselors.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Education
- Full‑time undergraduate student with at least 30 earned credits and a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 at the end of the fall 2023 semester.
- Strong academic proficiency to tutor in one or more of the following high school subject areas:
English, Mathematics, SAT Prep, Science, STEM, and Introductory Foreign Language classes (i.e., Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, German, Greek, etc.).
Experience
- Demonstrated leadership and problem‑solving skills.
- Experience in residence life, youth programs, mentoring, or tutoring.
- Ability to work with diverse adolescent populations.
Additional Requirements & Expectations
- 24/7 availability during program (Sunday afternoon through Friday evening).
- On‑campus residence, sharing a suite with 7–10 high school students.
- No enrollment in summer classes during the employment period.
- Adherence to all program, College, and State regulations.
- Available through Saturday, August 9 for project completion.
- At least one plus year of college housing experience.
- Recent college graduates and post‑graduate degree students.
- Salary ranges from $2,800 – $3,800 (
all required taxes will be deducted
). - Board:
Monday–Friday (except July 4). - Room will be provided for the entire period of employment.
- Fringe benefits will include health insurance, which will only be provided from June 30 to August 8 and will be secondary to the employee’s health plan.

In the cover letter, specify three subjects from the Required Qualifications that you can tutor. A tutor counselor can be assigned to tutor up to three classes.

Foreign citizens working in the U.S. under a visa should note this is a short‑term position, and Rhode Island College will not sponsor a work‑authorization visa of any kind. Before employment can be finalized, the prospective employee must be cleared through the National Criminal Background Check and must submit specific forms required by the RI College Human Resources Office promptly.
