Position Description
The Department of Industrial Design at Rhode Island School of Design ( RISD ), invites applications for part‑time faculty members to teach in the spring semester, 2027. Applications for fall 2027 will also be considered. RISD recognizes principles of social equity, inclusion, and diversity as fundamental to its mission as an art and design school. RISD is committed to the collective work of institutional transformation and values applicants whose teaching, pedagogical and professional experiences have prepared them to foster and sustain equitable learning environments. We especially welcome faculty whose pedagogy engages diverse perspectives, expands forms of knowledge, and helps foster a culture of belonging where all students, staff, and faculty can thrive. The Industrial Design Department seeks design historians to teach the required History of Industrial Design lecture course to RISD undergraduate students.
This course provides students with a foundation in the diverse histories, cultural perspectives, and development of the field of product design. The course is taught in the sophomore year of a BFA curriculum that educates students in critical thinking, design process, studio practice, and manufacturing techniques. In this course, students should learn how products were informed by society/social history and how designers are part of an intricate system of economy, culture, and progress.
The Industrial Revolution and mass production are key periods needing deeper exploration. The instructor may include aspects of the existing department curriculum developed over the last several years as well as exploring more deeply periods and technologies that represent that faculty member’s expertise.
