Handling multi‑state sales/use tax recovery projects for large, sophisticated organizations requires more than just a technical understanding of current sales and use tax rules. As a Sales and Use Tax Senior assigned to EY’s Sales and Use Tax Lookback Review Center of Excellence (COE), you will build and apply your knowledge on a wide range of sales and use tax recovery projects for clients in multiple industries.

The opportunity

Our Sales and Use Tax Lookback Review COE is a national team that leads large multi‑state recovery projects for EY’s largest clients. It is an environment where you can develop as a multi‑state sales and use tax practitioner, take on new responsibilities as they arise and take advantage of dedicated mentors and training programs.

Key Responsibilities

There is no average day for a Sales and Use Tax Senior in the COE—you’ll work on diverse projects and tasks. Clients rely on your up‑to‑the‑minute tax advice, and you will thrive in a collaborative culture that values listening and sharing information.

Skills And Attributes For Success
  • Research clients’ business operations and build long‑lasting relationships
  • Identify applicable sales and use tax exemptions and exclusions
  • Flag potential over‑payment opportunities or risks and communicate these to clients
  • Monitor current tax law changes to maintain credibility as a trusted advisor
  • Develop clear, intelligent plans and approaches for sales and use tax recoveries
  • Prepare and defend sales and use tax refund claims
  • Participate on a motivated team of professionals
  • Supervise a motivated team and support their growth
To qualify for the role, you must have
  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline
  • Professional knowledge in a broad range of sales and use tax processes, concepts, and tools
  • A proven record of excellence in a professional services or tax organization
  • Technical writing and research experience in a tax context
  • The ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects
  • Strong influencing skills and confidence to question existing processes
  • Willingness to travel as needed, and ability to work in a balanced hybrid environment
Ideally, you’ll also have
  • An achieved or partially achieved CPA qualification, certification as a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation, a CMI designation, or the ability to sit for a state bar

  • Competitive compensation and benefits package: base salary range $81,700 to $135,000 nationwide; $98,100 to $153,500 for NY, CA (ex‑Sacramento), and Washington. Rewards are based on performance and impact, with medical, dental, pension, 401(k), and extensive paid time‑off options.
