Overview
Medical Laboratory Scientist role at Brown University Health. The Pathology Technologist reports to the Pathology Manager and performs complex clinical laboratory tests across the Pathology Department. The role requires professional knowledge to read and interpret test results, especially abnormal or atypical findings, and to maintain laboratory quality and compliance.
Responsibilities- Calibrate instruments, conduct quality controls, and prepare reagents and solutions following standard laboratory protocols.
- Perform routine and specialized blood tests, hematology procedures, coagulation factor analysis, and microbial isolation and antibiotic susceptibility testing.
- Analyze chemical and body fluid tests for conditions such as glucose, electrolytes, and drugs.
- Record, review, and report test results accurately; communicate findings with physicians and authorized personnel.
- Assist in training students, residents, and new employees and provide laboratory orientation.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, perform preventative maintenance, troubleshoot problems, and support equipment operation.
- Follow biosafety and hazardous material protocols and monitor specimen handling and transport.
- Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or related field and one year of laboratory experience.
- National certification by ASCP or equivalent in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, or Hematology.
- Knowledge of CLIA standards and proficiency in interpreting laboratory test results.
- Physical dexterity and ability to stand, lift, and work at laboratory benches; visual acuity for specimen examination.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary teams.
Physical Requirements
Exposure to odors, infectious materials, toxins, and other hazardous substances. Visual strain while examining specimens. Regular standing, lifting, and carrying of supplies.
Pay Range$28.95 - $47.76
