SUMMARY:

- Works with a microscope to detect a variety of diseases, including cancer and pre‑cancerous changes, and refers abnormal findings to the Pathologist, colleagues, or supervisors as appropriate.
- Must understand the significance of clinical information and the ways cells respond to disease, drugs, and radiation, and also changes that can occur in the processing of cellular materials.
- Makes the final cytologic interpretation on smears from gynecological samples that are within normal limits.
- Formulates preliminary diagnosis on all specimens which are then reviewed by a Pathologist who prepares the final diagnosis report.
- Responsible for receiving, logging, and determination of adequacy of non‑gynocological specimens.
- Processes specimens to ensure maximum cellular recovery using established methods.
- Stains cellular materials concentrated on slides to enhance morphologic features.
- Prepares, changes, and maintains staining solutions.
- Responsible for slide maintenance, filling, and retrieval.
- Effectively conveys information to staff responsible for patient care.
- Adheres to established Quality Control guidelines in all phases of laboratory operation.
- Responsible for identification and correction of unexpected as well as frequently occurring problems.
- Responsible for maintenance of a safe environment for laboratory personnel.
- Must adhere to Universal Precautions guidelines established by the department.
- Prepares and maintains necessary work records and statistics.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and successful completion of a cytotechnology internship from an approved program (ASCP (CT) registry of eligible).
- National Certification (or eligible) in Cytology by ASCP or equivalent.
- Must possess keen perceptual ability.
- Must be able to function as part of a team which includes physicians, surgeons, nurses, therapists, and other specialists to assure a high quality of patient care.
- Microscopic work requires intense concentration and confinement for long periods of time over which accuracy and productivity must be maintained.
- Must maintain a consistent high level of quality specimen processing skill, technical excellence, and expertise.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
