Clinical Pharmacist Specialist - Medical Intensive Care Unit
Brown University Health – Rhode Island Hospital is currently recruiting for a clinical pharmacist specialist for our 18-bed medical intensive care unit (MICU). This individual is expected to serve as an integral member of the critical care pharmacy team as well as the MICU and respiratory ICU team.
SummaryResponsibilities include but are not limited to: responding bedside to medical emergencies and code blue activations, leading quality improvement initiatives, stewarding antimicrobial selection, optimizing formulary and EMR workflow, providing nursing and provider education, precepting APPE, PGY1, and PGY2 learners, lectures for physician assistant programs, involvement with pulmonary hypertension and ECMO programs.
Core Responsibilities- Respond bedside to medical emergencies and code blue activations.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives.
- Steward antimicrobial selection and optimize formulary and EMR workflow.
- Provide nursing and provider education.
- Precept APPE, PGY1, PGY2 learners and lecture for physician assistant programs.
- Work with pulmonary hypertension and ECMO programs.
- Monitor, assess, recommend changes to medication use and optimize pharmacotherapy.
- Participate in therapeutic drug policy and implement corrective strategies.
- Monitor pharmacy clinical services via continuous quality improvement and total quality management initiatives.
- Coordinate pharmacy clinical programs including pharmacoeconomics, pharmacotherapeutics, pharmaceutical care, and drug information services.
- Serve as subject matter expert and real‑time go‑to resource in specialty area.
- Facilitate education and training of residents, students, nurses, PAs, and medical students.
- Prepare and present lectures and research findings at professional meetings.
- Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.
D.) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy with advanced study in pharmacy or health care related field, preferably a master’s degree or comparable work experience. - Registered Pharmacist in the State of Rhode Island with current unrestricted licensure.
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
- Completion of Post Graduate Year 2 (PGY‑2) Residency in critical care or related specialty, or national board certification in Pharmacotherapy preferred.
- Departmental certification in Medication Management (MTM).
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Knowledge of pharmacy information systems and automated dispensing technology.
Physical Requirements
Extended periods of standing and walking; visual and manual dexterity required to operate a computer; occasional travel between facilities or sites.
Independent ActionFunctions independently within a broad scope of departmental policies and practices, referring complex problems to Senior Clinical Pharmacist when needed.
