Surgical Tech

Summary

Under the close supervision of a professional nurse and/or physician, perform a variety of duties in the operating room to assist the surgical team, such as scrubbing on all types of surgical procedures, lifting and positioning patients, cleaning instruments, restocking supplies, etc. Brown University Health employees are expected to successfully role‑model the organization’s values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence as these values guide our everyday actions with patients, customers and one another.

• Assist in preparing operating rooms for surgical procedures, ensuring that all necessary instruments, equipment and supplies are available and properly stored.
• Assist nursing personnel and orderlies in lifting and positioning patients for surgical procedures.
• Scrub on all types of surgical procedures and pass instruments, sutures and sponges; assist in holding retractors and suctioning patients while anticipating the needs of the physician.
• Maintain strict aseptic techniques in the operating room area, reporting and correcting any breaks in such techniques.
• Clean surgical instruments and equipment after procedures using sterilization equipment (autoclaves and ultrasonic), then wrap and store them.
• Remove soiled linen and supplies from the operating room after surgeries and assist in the general cleaning of the area.
• Obtain clean linen and supplies and set up the room for the next procedure.
• Obtain special equipment and supplies from the appropriate storage areas.
• Remove unused supplies from the surgery cart and store them in the appropriate area for future use.
• Stock surgical supplies in the operating rooms and storage areas and perform other duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of various surgical procedures to assist and anticipate physician needs.
• Knowledge of surgical equipment and aseptic techniques; ability to operate sterilization equipment.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care to patients throughout the lifespan, considering aging processes, developmental stages, and cultural patterns.
• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Completion of at least one of the following options is required:
• Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program.
• Graduate of a surgical technologist associate degree program.
• Current certification as a CST.
• Current NCCT‑TC (tech in surgery) certification (for applicants with past military experience; military experience as a surgical technologist will be strongly considered).
• Three years of experience within the past five years as a surgical technologist.
• Successful completion of a Brown University Health on‑the‑job surgical technologist training program.
• Current BLS Certification is required upon hire.

Pay Range: $29.18 - $47.60

Work Type: Enter the Work Schedule (M‑F 8:00am‑5:00pm) Sunday‑Saturday 10 hour days with call/weekends/rotations/holiday requirements
