Summary:
Under the supervision of the Pathology Manager, Phlebotomy Supervisor, or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, the role includes obtaining blood and various other patient specimens, transporting specimens, and completing basic records. The position also involves related clerical support activities such as interviewing and instructing patients, entering data into a computerized database, and maintaining records and reports. - Schedule venipunctures or capillary blood punctures according to priority and type of test, such as time studies.
- Utilize computer‑generated collection labels and reference the Pathology Handbook as necessary to ensure specimens are collected in proper containers and meet special collection requirements.
- Perform duties according to hospital policy and observance of universal precautions.
- Verify and identify patients following established procedures and ensure proper patient preparation prior to specimen collection (e.g., fasting, special diet).
- Obtain blood samples from patients using venipuncture or capillary puncture techniques.
- Collect other specimen types (e.g., throat cultures), split or centrifuge samples as required, and alert nursing staff or supervisor to any deviations or adverse patient conditions.
- Perform coagulation tests such as bleeding times.
- Label, wrap, and prepare samples/specimens for transportation, documenting appropriately.
- Maintain records of sample/specimen procurement.
- Perform clerical activities: sort and file records, receive patients into clinic/treatment area, interview patients to obtain insurance, biographical, and medical information for registration records.
- Provide patients with required forms and give instructions regarding any special preparation necessary prior to tests or appointments.
- Contact patients to return and repeat tests if needed.
- Contact outside agencies or physicians’ offices to obtain additional patient information to complete records.
- Enter patient data into the department computer system.
- Identify billing errors and make adjustments to reconcile errors.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Phlebotomy certificate through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and/or completion of a Phlebotomy certificate program that includes a formal internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures.
- In lieu of an internship, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered.
- In lieu of a phlebotomy certificate, 5+ years of direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
- Ability to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants.
- Interpersonal skills to obtain and provide information to patients and to explain procedures effectively to allay fears and anxiety.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human developmental stages, and cultural patterns.
- Clerical skills, including keyboard proficiency, to prepare and maintain records and reports.
- Familiarity with blood collection equipment, anticoagulants, special precautions, and interference factors.
- Ability to distinguish chromatic colors.
Physical Requirements
Works in an in‑patient care environment with considerable walking between units and physical exertion may be required to assist uncooperative patients. Exposure to odors and communicable diseases may occur, but adherence to infection‑control procedures minimizes injury risk. Manual dexterity is required for venipunctures.
