Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the EEG Lead Technologist(s) and according to established procedures, this role conducts electroencephalographic examinations, collects information, and prepares impressions of findings to assist physicians in evaluating and diagnosing cerebral conditions by recording the brain's electrical activity. Activities may be performed in clinical or intraoperative settings, monitoring EEG activity under local or general anesthesia and performing evoked potential monitoring (EVP) procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Performs a full range of EEG and EVP procedures in various hospital settings, including the operating room, special procedures section of radiology, and laboratory.
  • Monitors brain activity of patients under anesthesia and communicates pertinent information to the surgeon during procedures.
  • Supports EEG monitoring in the special procedures laboratory or operating room, including brain mapping, intraoperative EEG, and special electrode recordings.
  • Interviews patients to obtain pertinent medical history, explain procedures, and facilitate cooperation.
  • Abstracts relevant information from patient charts.
  • Ensures electrode sterilization and proper electrode placement, using precautionary measures to prevent infections when using needle electrodes.
  • Calibrates, checks, and adjusts the EEG and EVP apparatus as needed.
  • Identifies and eliminates artifacts, using activating procedures such as hyperventilation and photic stimulation.
  • Notifies supervisor for sleep induction and obtains required recordings.
  • Documents all actions taken and records clinical manifestations observed during tests.
  • Reviews and analyzes tracings, preparing technical impressions indicating focal, lateralized, paroxysmal, or artifactual changes.
  • May perform premature infant testing at Rhode Island Hospital and Women and Infants Hospital.
  • Provides patient preparation, including head measurement and electrode placement.
  • Observes physiological parameters (eye movements, respiration, cardiac activity) alongside multi‑channel EEG recordings.
  • Performs WADA studies and can conduct closed‑circuit video recordings as needed.
  • Monitors patients at bedside for extended periods and patients with specialized electrodes.
  • Maintains equipment condition, detects malfunctions, makes minor repairs, and reports the need for major repair.
  • Conducts long‑term monitoring at bedside for pentobarbitone coma in pediatric and adult patients.
  • Participates in ongoing education, conferences, meetings, and literature review to enhance technical expertise.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Successful completion of post‑high school education.
  • One‑ or two‑year accredited program in EEG Technology; clinical affiliation preferred.
  • Eligibility to sit for the American Board of Registration in Electroencephalographic Technology written examination within three years of placement (1,000 EEG examinations required).
  • Solid knowledge of EEG techniques, concepts, and equipment.
  • Manual dexterity for accurate electrode placement and equipment operation.
  • Visual acuity and sustained attention for detecting minor differences in EEG tracings up to two hours.
  • Analytical ability and communication skills to formulate concise technical impressions.
  • Interpersonal skills to explain procedures and allay patient anxiety.
  • Knowledge of brain pathologies and conditions impacting cerebral function.
  • Experience:

    up to one year on‑the‑job training acceptable; experience preferred.
Work Environment &

Physical Requirements

Normal patient care environment with exposure to infectious disease and volatile substances (acetone, ether, alcohol). Some physical effort may be required for patients with behavioral problems.

Pay Range: $27.49 – $44.96 per hour
