SUMMARY
The Pathology Technologist reports to the Pathology Manager. Under general supervision and within department policies and procedures, performs various complex clinical laboratory tests in one or more laboratory sections of the Pathology Department. Work requires a professional level of knowledge to read, interpret, and monitor test results, especially abnormal or atypical findings. Responsibilities include calibrating instruments, conducting quality controls, reporting test results, and related tasks.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
- Perform complex clinical laboratory tests across the Pathology Department, monitoring procedures and interpreting results.
- Conduct routine and specialized blood tests, including typing, cross‑matching, and compatibility testing.
- Isolate and identify microorganisms from clinical specimens and perform antibiotic susceptibility tests.
- Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, measuring glucose, electrolytes, gases, drugs, and alcohol levels.
- Record and review test results for accuracy, prepare reports, and relay findings to physicians or authorized recipients.
- Discuss findings with physicians when necessary.
- Assist in the instruction of students and residents and orient new employees to assigned laboratory sections.
- Perform quality control checks on equipment and reagents; log values and use results to identify potential problems.
- Perform new tests and procedures during development stages, making recommendations for modification and establishment of new tests.
- Monitor equipment operation; set up and calibrate equipment, troubleshoot problems, perform preventive maintenance, and perform minor repairs.
- Log specimens and maintain specimen records during tests; collect patient blood samples following established procedures and transport specimens to Pathology for testing.
- Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, work benches, and related items.
- Bachelor's degree in a laboratory science such as clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a closely related field, or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.
- National certification by ASCP or equivalent in one of the offered categories (Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, or other recognized categorical certifications).
- Eligible for national certification with laboratory training, including completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS‑approved organization.
- One year experience in a clinical laboratory.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to operate equipment and perform all procedures and tests within the assigned laboratory section and interpret them accurately.
- Physical and visual dexterity necessary to conduct and interpret tests; physical ability to stand and work at laboratory benches.
- Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
One year experience in a clinical laboratory.
WORK ENVIRONMENT ANDPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Exposure to odors, infectious materials, toxins, and other hazardous substances. Visual strain encountered while closely examining specimens. Regularly required to stand, lift, and carry supplies and perform other related tasks.
PAY RANGE$28.95-$47.76
