Biomedical Equipment Tech II (Brown University Health, Miriam Hospital, 164 Summit Ave, Providence, Rhode Island)

Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager Medical Engineering, the Biomedical Equipment Technician II cleans and prepares equipment for repair and inspection. Performs safety inspections, performance verifications, calibrations, and preventative maintenance, and repairs general medical devices to the manufacturers’ specifications. Prepares and maintains departmental maintenance records. Identifies and determines solutions to equipment, equipment applications and other safety‑related issues with the use of medical devices.

Responsibilities
  • Cleans and prepares equipment for repair and inspection following manufacturer and department procedures.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, calibration, and safety inspections of general medical equipment and apparatuses (e.g., life support systems, patient monitors, defibrillators, infusion pumps, laboratory equipment).
  • Determines feasibility of repair or necessity for replacement of equipment and, as appropriate, repairs equipment.
  • Secures supervisory approval for ordering replacement parts not in inventory and notifies supervisor if unit is not repairable.
  • Disassembles and inspects equipment using hand tools, test equipment, and special biomedical test equipment.
  • Prepares paperwork and, with supervisor approval, orders parts, ships equipment for factory service, or coordinates vendor on‑site services.
  • Assists with equipment installation and product recall corrective actions.
  • Conducts equipment safety rounds on clinical floors responsible for safe use and storage of medical devices.
  • Prepares and maintains records for inventory, safety tests, repairs, and preventive maintenance activities for entry into the computer system.
  • Responds to emergency repair calls for patient‑connected life support systems requiring expeditious analysis and resolution of problems.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree in electrical, electronic, mechanical technology or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of electro‑mechanical and electronic equipment maintenance; ability to read circuit diagrams and manufacturer service manuals.
  • One to three years’ progressive experience in electronics, electrical, electro‑mechanical or computer maintenance; biomedical equipment maintenance in a healthcare environment preferred.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications and database record‑keeping applications.
  • Strong oral and written communication and customer service skills.
Work Environment and

Physical Requirements

Physical ability to lift units weighing up to fifty pounds; lift heavy objects above head level. Visual acuity and manual dexterity required for small hand tools and testing equipment. Incumbent works in a patient‑care environment with electrical equipment; hazards are mitigated by adherence to safety procedures.

  • Functions independently within department policies and procedures.
  • Refers complex issues to supervisor when clarification is required.
  • Maintains professional appearance, initiative, and customer service skills; maintains accurate and timely documentation.
Salary

Pay Range: $28.95 - $47.76 per hour
