Summary
Under the supervision of a pharmacist and direction of a technician group leader or technician specialist, performs a variety of technical and support tasks designed to assist pharmacists in the formulation, preparation, dispensing and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, federal and state rules, and regulations, and in keeping with the scope of services provided and with consideration to the age of the patients being served.

- Review medication orders and prepare medications for pharmacist review.
- Operate electronic drug dispensing system (EDDS) including inventory control, assigning, refilling and removing medication, and generating reports.
- Maintain operating room medication inventory, including controlled substances.
- Prepare intravenous admixtures (chemotherapy, critical care infusions, pediatric infusions) using aseptic techniques in a controlled environment.
- Prepare and repack non‑sterile pharmaceutical products according to formulation records.
- Resolve controlled substance discrepancies and participate in inventory management.
- Deliver medications to clinic, procedural, operating room, and patient care areas.
- Retrieve medication orders, repackage and label medications for distribution.
- Prepare emergency medication kits for pharmacist review and distribution.
- Procure and inventory medications, including chemotherapy supplies.
- Process medication requisitions for departments and laboratories and reconcile charges.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Assist in maintaining pharmacy records and calibrate equipment.
- Maintain medication supply areas orderly under proper conditions for light, temperature, sanitation, and segregation.
- Participate in quality assessment and improvement activities and medication safety initiatives.
- Report medication errors, near misses, and prevented errors.
- Answer telephone and triage as appropriate.
- Interact with internal and external customers in accordance with hospital Customer Service Standards.
- Assist in orientation and training of other pharmacy technicians and interns.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school graduate or equivalent; completion of one to two years of college preferred.
- Current unrestricted Rhode Island Pharmacy Technician licensure.
- Holds and maintains current National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) or has a minimum of one‑year licensed pharmacy technician work experience.
- Sits for National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) exam within first six months of hire and achieves and maintains certification within twelve months.
- Possesses basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Physical ability to lift, carry and maneuver medication delivery equipment and pharmaceutical related inventories; extended periods of standing and walking required.
- Requires successful pass of a drug screen in conformance with Rhode Island State Law.
- Independent performance within department policies and practices; refers complex problems to supervisor.
Pay Range: $21.72-$22.23
