Overview

Under supervision of the Emergency Department Clinical Manager, the Phlebotomist performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. The phlebotomist obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests in the Emergency Department (ED) or the Clinical Decision Unit. Samples are taken from pediatric and adult patients, prepared for transport to the laboratory, and related records are maintained.

Responsibilities
  • Performs venipunctures according to priority or as directed by the nurse, including timed studies.
  • Uses computer‑generated collection labels and references the Pathology Handbook to ensure specimens comply with established procedures.
  • Verifies patient identity, prepares patients for drawing (e.g., fasting), and obtains blood samples from adult, pediatric, and infant patients.
  • Alerts nursing staff or supervisor to deviations from expected puncture procedures or adverse patient conditions.
  • May collect other specimen types (e.g., throat culture).
  • Labels, wraps, and transports samples according to type and urgency.
  • Maintains record of sample procurement and performs related clerical activities, including daily checklists and workstation maintenance.
  • Performs duties in accordance with hospital policy, universal precautions, and electronic medical record system requirements.
  • Follows established policies for patient identification, verification, and documentation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Phlebotomy certificate through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences or completion of a phlebotomy certificate program with formal internship of 100 successful venipunctures; otherwise 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered.
  • Five or more years of direct phlebotomy experience may be considered in lieu of certification.
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants.
  • Interpersonal skills for effective patient communication and anxiety reduction.
  • Clerical skills to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Familiarity with blood collection equipment, anticoagulants, and special precautions.
  • Manual dexterity to perform safe venipuncture.
Work Environment &

Physical Requirements
  • In‑patient care environment with considerable walking between units and occasional physical effort to assist patients.
  • Exposure to odors and communicable diseases while handling specimens.
  • Adherence to infection control procedures to minimize injury risk.

  • No supervisory responsibility.
