Under the close supervision of a professional nurse and/or physician, perform a variety of duties in the operating room to assist the surgical team, such as scrubbing on all types of surgical procedures, lifting and positioning patients, cleaning instruments, restocking supplies, etc. Brown University Health employees are expected to successfully role‑model the organization’s values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence as these values guide our everyday actions with patients, customers and one another.

- Assists in preparing operating rooms for surgical procedures, ensuring that all necessary instruments, equipment and supplies are available and properly stored.
- Assists nursing personnel and orderlies in lifting and positioning patients for surgical procedures.
- Scrubs on all types of surgical procedures and passes instruments, sutures and sponges; assists in holding retractors and suctioning patients and anticipates the needs of the physician.
- Maintains strict aseptic techniques in the operating room area, reporting and correcting any “breaks” in such techniques.
- Cleans surgical instruments and equipment after surgical procedures by operating sterilization equipment (i.e., autoclaves and ultrasonic) and wrapping and storing such equipment and instruments after they are cleaned.
- Removes soiled linen and supplies from the operating room after surgical procedures and assists in the general cleaning of the area.
- Obtains clean linen and supplies and sets up the room for the next procedure.
- Obtains special equipment and supplies from the appropriate storage areas.
- Removes unused supplies from the surgery cart and stores them in the appropriate area for use.
- Stocks surgical supplies in the operating rooms and storage areas and performs other duties as assigned.
Basic Knowledge/Experience
- Knowledge of various surgical procedures to assist and anticipate physician needs.
- Knowledge of various surgical equipment and aseptic techniques; ability to operate sterilization equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
Education and Certification
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- At least one of the following options: graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program; graduate of a surgical technologist associate degree program; current certification as a CST; current NCCT‑TC (tech in surgery) certification (for applicants with past military experience only; military experience as a surgical technologist will be strongly considered); or 3 years of experience within the past 5 years as a surgical technologist.
- Successful completion of a Brown University Health on‑the‑job surgical technologist training program.
- Current BLS Certification is required upon hire.
Physical Requirements
Required to work in a sterile environment and regularly exposed to cuts and punctures from surgical instruments and equipment, burns from autoclaves, anesthesia gases, as well as odors and communicable diseases from patients. Physical ability to assist in lifting and positioning of patients and to stand for extended periods of time during surgical procedures.
Pay Range
: $29.18 – $47.60
