SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Medical Director and Manager or designee, follows established policies and procedures to perform the role of Community Paramedic. Responsibilities include delivery of patient care, training, equipment use and maintenance, and research efforts. Maintains clinical skills, knowledge of literature in the field and outreach, and training objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Consistently applies the corporate values of respect, honesty and fairness and the pursuit of excellence in improving the health status of the people of the region. Acts in accordance with Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University Health Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct. Functions alone and as part of a healthcare team, providing assessment and care to patients with chronic medical, prenatal, and behavioral problems.

Identifies patient needs and assists in connecting patients with available community and medical resources. Performs in accordance with established community paramedicine procedures and techniques, exercising independent judgment. Supports existing health services by providing integrated health services in partnership with other health professionals. Extends access to health services delivery in underserved populations, including primary care, public health, disease management, prevention, and wellness.

Assists in developing patient care protocols and methods; participates in training curricula and research.

Conducts post‑hospital release follow‑up care, monitoring medications, dressing changes, and vital signs. Observes and reports patient conditions, drug reactions, treatments, and significant incidences to physicians. Provides patient education on diabetes prevention and treatment; hypertension, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, fall assessments, injury evaluation, geriatric frailty visits, nail care, nutrition; performs home safety evaluations and blood draws. Utilizes point‑of‑care testing and ultrasound;

picks up and delivers some patient needs such as medications.

Receives referrals and schedules community paramedic visits. Performs essential functions of a paramedic as appropriate; examines, screens, treats, and coordinates health services. Ensures all encounters are documented within protocols in both EMS ePCR and Epic hospital charting. Maintains clear concise communication with patients’ families, physicians and other healthcare personnel through radios, telephones and visits, establishing rapport. Uses various software programs including electronic health records and general office software.

Prepares reports and logs observations, incidents, treatments, and deviations from standard operating procedures. Attends required staff and educational meetings, remains current with literature. Assists in writing presentations and papers for publications and may present findings pletes patient documentation per Rhode Island Hospital and RIDOH EMS regulations. Performs public education, marketing and outreach, maintains a cheerful, positive attitude toward patients, families and the public.

Maintains a clean operational environment, retrieves stocks and cleans medical equipment. Reports to remote locations for duty, responds to on‑call emergencies, disasters and major incidents. Performs data entry and clerical assistance; assists with Emergency Department communications and dispatch.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current State of Rhode Island EMT‑Paramedic license with a minimum of 1 year field EMS experience.
  • Current Paramedic certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
  • Current ACLS, BLS and PALS certifications (instructor status preferred). Maintains certifications as mandated.
  • Valid and current driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Nursing or related field preferred.
