Summary:

Under general supervision of the Manager Interpreter Services & Information Desk or designee, the Medical Interpreter provides both oral and written foreign language interpretation services to non-English speaking patients and employees. Explains hospital policies and procedures and provides assistance to patients who have limited English proficiency. All essential functions reflect the age-specific needs of patients. Sign Language Interpreters are also provided for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Patients and their families.

Responsibilities
  • Provide oral and written foreign language interpretation services to non-English speaking patients and Sign Language interpreters for Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and their families.
  • Interpret questions, responses, and instructions from medical providers and staff to patients, including technical terms; interpret patient responses and questions in person or by telephone.
  • Interviews patients to complete required forms and guides patients to appointments by telephone or via escort when medically necessary.
  • Assist hospital personnel by explaining billing systems, Community Free Service, HMOs and third-party procedures; aid patients in completing paperwork.
  • Interpret cultural beliefs of non-English speaking patients and facilitate communication between hospital personnel and outside institutions or agencies as needed.
  • Provide training to hospital personnel around cultural issues and ethnicity; support student interpreters and act as liaison for educational purposes when needed.
  • Translate medical documents or information for hospital staff, patients, and families (e.g., medication instructions, brief letters) accurately and precisely.
  • Record and maintain related documentation logs, records, and statistical data; maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control compliance.
  • Perform other related duties as required (e.g., answering telephone, inputting data).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
  • Associate Degree in any area related to science or human services or equivalent experience.
  • Fluency and proficiency in English and a target foreign language; ability to accurately interpret and translate verbal and written material.
  • Medical Interpreter Training Program Certificate; proficiency in Medical Terminology in English and a foreign language.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with medical providers and patients in emotionally challenging situations.
  • Ability to interview, assess and train student interpreters and serve as liaison for educational purposes (e.g., Brown University Interpreter Aide Program).
  • Knowledge, sensitivity, and ability to bridge ethnic values and cultural beliefs with American medical practices. Sign Language interpreters require certification and/or license.
Experience

Minimum of one to two years of formal Medical Interpreting.

Work Environment and Schedule

Works in a normal office environment with significant exposure to patient care settings.

Compensation

Pay Range: $25.24-$25.86
