Job Overview

The Automation Engineer- DC is responsible for the on‑going support, testing, maintenance, and implementation of automation systems that operate within UNFI’s distribution centers. This role works closely with Maintenance teams to ensure the automation systems continue operational excellence and improves business operations through DC automation.

Job Responsibilities
  • Design, configure and test DC automation systems which include conveyor systems, multi shuttles, pick to light, pick to voice, carousels, WCS application servers, MHE based applications, distribution equipment and RF devices.
  • Configure and conduct any testing required within system and comply with safety regulations.
  • Gather process requirements from key DC in‑house associates and vendors and ensure systems support process requirements.
  • Collaborate with in‑house associates and vendors on daily processes, projects, support, and maintenance.
  • Create documentation around issues, technical design, process, resolutions and track calls using Remedy System, following up with users on open tickets.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation of networks, systems and associated architecture.
System Maintenance
  • Support lower‑level maintenance technicians in diagnosing equipment issues or conducting complex repairs, adjustments and part replacements.
  • Assist technicians in maintaining decorating, capping, welding, and conveyor equipment.
  • Support third‑party vendors during equipment installations.
  • Create work orders and preventive maintenance documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

Education/Certifications

  • Completion of a craft apprenticeship, or an equivalent number of years of education and production maintenance experience.

Experience

  • 3-6 years of experience in materials handling, preferably in warehousing or distribution environments.
  • 3-6 years of experience in manufacturing and PLC.
  • 3-6 years of experience working with PLCs, photo eyes, diffusers, barcode scanners, diverters, label printers, and access points.
  • 3-6 years of experience with warehouse technology such as pick to light and pick to voice, Allen Bradley RSLogix 500 and RSLogix 5000 PLC software.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures.
  • Understanding of electrical, pneumatic systems, conveyors, motors and packaging equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AC and DC electrical systems and circuits.
  • Proficiency with software programs: MS Office Suite, Adobe Professional, AutoCAD, MS Visio.
  • Working knowledge of Psion, Symbol and Motorola Access Points and RF Devices.
  • Good judgment and ability to work independently when supervision is not immediately available.
Hybrid Role
  • Position follows a hybrid schedule working in office a specified number of days per week. The acceptable split between onsite and remote work is determined by the manager. Hybrid associates may choose to work from an office more frequently than required.
Travel (Major)
  • Travel required up to 50% of the time, which may include unplanned travel.
Physical Environment/Demands
  • Exposed to temperatures ranging from
    -20° to 35°F in Perishable Operations and 37° to 90°F in Grocery Operations.
  • Ability to perform repetitive arm, wrist, and hand movements during maintenance and service procedures.
  • Must be able to work with hands and arms overhead, and work in or under equipment.
  • Requires manual dexterity, overall coordination, and good balance to work both at ground level and in high places.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Employee may sit for long periods at a desk or computer terminal.
  • During duties, employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
  • Employee may use calculators, keyboards, telephones, and other office equipment during a normal workday.
  • Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required.
