Summary
Under general supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee), renders professional nursing care according to established procedures for the assigned area of the Operating Room. Performs duties as scrub nurse or circulating nurse during surgical procedures and provides intensive nursing care to post‑operative patients when assigned to the post‑anesthesia recovery area. Renders professional nursing care to peri‑operative patients, including review of patients’ charts, administration of medication, starting IVs and hanging blood, electrocardiography, venipuncture, catheterization, defibrillation, and other complex or routine treatments as prescribed by physicians or needed by the patient’s condition; initiates or participates in life‑saving procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation; participates in planning and implementation of nursing care plans for assigned patients;
utilizes professional judgment to evaluate appropriateness of planned or prescribed treatment given the patient’s current condition and modifies treatment or contacts physicians as circumstances require; reviews patient chart to ensure pertinent information (lab reports, operative permits) and pre‑operative medications and orders are completed; verifies patient identity prior to surgical procedures; performs nursing duties according to the procedures of the area assigned;
assists during surgical procedures by preparing and directing others in preparation of instruments, equipment and supplies; scrubs or circulates on cases; anticipates needs of the surgeon; maintains sterile techniques; applies dressings; administers medication; and provides total nursing care of patients in the Operating Room; as assigned to post‑anesthesia recovery area, admits postoperative patients, checks for stability of vital signs, ventilates and suctions patients, inserts catheters, administers oxygen, monitors vital signs, and communicates with anesthesia or surgical staff as indicated;
determines when patient’s condition is stable and releases them to the designated hospital area; maintains records and charts, reporting pertinent information regarding patient condition, medication given, and treatments administered; and assists in directing, orienting, training, and providing functional guidance to surgical technicians and new nursing personnel as requested. Maintains and enhances professional expertise through participation in appropriate educational activities.
- Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as an RN in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Current licensure to practice as an RN in the State of Rhode Island.
- Professional knowledge of clinical nursing to provide care to pre‑operative patients under stressful conditions requiring mastery of sterile techniques, surgical procedures, and special precautions.
- Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
- Visual and aural acuity to monitor patient progress.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
- Up to one year of combined previous related and on‑the‑job experience in an Operating Room or a Surgical Center.
Physical Requirements
Two (2) consecutive twelve‑hour shifts every weekend in the Operating Room and/or post‑anesthesia recovery area. Frequent exposure to anesthetic gases; risk of injury from puncture by surgical instruments, exposure to infectious wounds, burns from autoclaves and electrical equipment. Physical ability for extensive walking and standing; lifting, positioning, and pushing patients on stretchers.
