The Nurse Practitioner reports to the Clinical Manager of PAT and works under the supervision of the Attending Physician of Record. The role involves the development and evaluation of treatment plans for patients scheduled to undergo surgery with anesthesia.
Key responsibilities include reviewing medical and surgical histories, performing physical examinations and review of systems, medication reconciliation, initiating life‑saving measures in emergencies, collaborating on care plans with patients, families, nurses, and physicians, providing education to patients and caregivers, interpreting electrocardiograms, and serving as a liaison between surgeons and anesthesia providers. The NP may also assist with clinical research, quality improvement activities, and maintain safety and infection control standards.
Responsibilities- Obtain and document medical and surgical histories for anesthesia.
- Perform and record physical examinations as needed.
- Record pertinent review of systems and communicate issues to anesthesia and surgeon.
- Initiate life‑saving measures in emergency situations (Basic Life Support).
- Collaborate with patients, families, nurses, and attending physicians to develop a plan of care.
- Provide educational and liaison support to health‑care team members.
- Interpret ECGs and rhythm strips.
- Act as liaison between surgeon and anesthesia provider.
- Assist in clinical research projects, including data entry and analysis.
- Participate in quality improvement teams and committees.
- Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Licensed Registered Nurse in Rhode Island or licensure under the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program with an MS degree.
- Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) for expanded practice with prescriptive privileges.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) by the American Heart Association.
- Minimum two years’ clinical experience as a nurse practitioner (preferred). Must have patient‑care services, procedures, and privileges approved by the sponsoring physician.
- Experience with pre‑operative assessment and anesthesia care.
Physical Requirements
Clinic setting. Physical hazards are minimized through adherence to established safety procedures and precautions.
