SUMMARY
The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) works under the general supervision of the physician and collaborates with the Senior Certified Nurse Midwife. The CNM provides direct clinical care in the out‑patient practice and in‑patient hospital coverage. The CNM’s responsibilities include the full scope of midwifery practice, such as well‑woman gynecological care throughout the reproductive, peri‑ and post‑menopausal periods; GYN problem visits; testing and contraception counseling with prescription, insertion, and removal of intrauterine devices.
The CNM manages high‑risk pregnancies in consultation with physicians. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age‑specific needs of the patient. - Diagnoses, monitors and examines women during pregnancy.
- Develops, assesses and evaluates individual care programs.
- Provides full antenatal care, including screening tests.
- Identifies high risk pregnancies working in collaboration or consultation with doctors and other medical specialists.
- Arranges and provides parenting and health education for the woman, her partner and family members.
- Encourages participation of family members in the birth to support the mother and enhance both mother/baby bonding and family relationships.
- Offers support and advice following events such as miscarriage, termination, stillbirth, neonatal abnormality and neonatal death, co-managing the care for women undergoing these complications with the obstetricians.
- Provides intra‑partum care, assisting mothers in labor and delivery, monitoring the condition of the fetus and using knowledge of drugs and pain management within the written scope of practice for CNMs at Women & Infants Hospital.
- Provides advice and guidance on a safe and timely discharge.
- Acts as a liaison with outside agencies and with other health and social care professionals to ensure continuity of care.
- Engages in professional development.
- Participates in the training and supervision of junior colleagues.
- Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
- Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN) required.
- American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) required.
- Current State of RI Midwifery Licensure and controlled substance registration required.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and sensitivity to cultural diversity in each step of the care process.
- 2 years' clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology experience as a Certified Nurse Midwife preferred.
- Must have patient care services, procedures and privileges approved by the sponsoring physician.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Healthcare environment such as hospital, physician's office practice, and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Any hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions.
