SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a licensed physician, performs a variety of duties to encompass, but not limited to, the care and management of orthopedic patients. Works in a collaborative team environment that supports the academic mission to train orthopedic residents. Provides inpatient and emergency department consults, pre‑ and post‑operative management of patients, assistance with procedures, wound care, and other patient care duties.

- Works closely with the orthopedic residents as part of the orthopedic team to coordinate patient care needs day‑to‑day for patients.
- Obtains and records detailed medical histories.
- Performs and records complete and detailed physical examinations.
- Records all pertinent patient information in the progress notes within the medical records.
- Assists in the preparation of discharge summaries.
- Initiates life‑saving measures in emergency situations until aid arrives.
- Initiates patient orders for admission as directed by the physician and in accordance with the hospital procedure.
- Assesses patient status, participates in the development of patient care management plans through communication and collaboration with the registered nurses, attending physicians, residents, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Attends and participates in daily collaborative care rounds.
- Performs credentialed procedures as delineated by medical staff credentialing requirements.
- Evaluates and cares for patients who present in the emergency room with orthopedic problems.
- Provides wound care, including cleaning and debridement of wounds, as well as dressing changes.
- Enters orders as needed into Lifechart.
- Assists on research projects as requested.
- Will see each patient admitted to the clinical service on a daily basis.
- Provides education for nursing staff as needed.
- Provides patient education during the daily delivery of care and during pre‑ and post‑operative settings.
- Participates in Orthopedics Service educational activities.
- Annually completes required training in orthopedics.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- BASIC KNOWLEDGE
- Bachelor’s Degree and two years of graduate study in an AMA‑approved Physician’s Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
- Current Licensure
- Current licensure as Physician’s Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the State of Rhode Island.
- Analytical Ability
- Extremely high level of analytical ability to apply post‑surgical training to the treatment of patients.
- Interpersonal Skills
- Good interpersonal skills to effectively deal with patients and nursing personnel.
- Life‑Span Care Knowledge
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, considering aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns at each step of the care process.
- Experience
- Preferred experience in general orthopedics, surgery and emergency room procedures; not required.
- Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care.
- Independent Action
- Performs independently within the department’s policies and practices; refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of policies and procedures is required.
