Nurse Practitioner Pediatrics

SUMMARY

The Pediatric Sedation/PICC Service Nurse Practitioner (NP) is accountable to facilitate a safe, quality sedation and/or vascular access experience and outcome for patients within a cost‑effective time frame. The NP is responsible to the Medical Director of the Pediatric Sedation/PICC Service and oversees the progress of a specific caseload of patients requiring sedation and vascular access services. The NP may also act as an educator, consultant, and liaison to healthcare providers requesting sedation and/or vascular access services, caring for patients across the care continuum.

• Demonstrate a fundamental grounding in nursing theory and practice with mastery of knowledge of pediatrics.
• Manage a caseload of patients in partnership with the Sedation team to optimize safe sedation delivery and vascular access, and ensure timely completion of required tests and procedures.
• Provide leadership in the development, validation, implementation, and evaluation of standards, policies, procedures, and critical paths to support the delivery of safe pediatric sedation and vascular access services.
• Assist the Sedation team to achieve mutually agreed‑upon sedation goals by providing necessary support, education, and encouragement.
• Demonstrate advanced physical and psychosocial assessment skills and understanding of family dynamics.
• Perform advanced practice skills under the supervision of the Medical Director.
• Provide expert consultation for clinical issues, promoting increased knowledge and skills for the consultee.
• Facilitate patient and family education in area of expertise.
• Annually complete mandatory safety, infection control, BLS, and ACLS/PALS training.
• Maintain prescriptive privileges per licensure.

• Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing, or licensure under the Nurse Licensure Compact.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing with completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
• Specialty certification in a related field.
• Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills in providing care to pediatric patients, considering developmental stages and cultural patterns.
• Two years of related RN experience in an acute‑care hospital setting, with the preferred 1–2 years as a nurse practitioner, especially in peri‑procedural or critical‑care areas.
• General hospital work environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care.
• No supervisory responsibilities.
