Job Description
The John Carter Brown Library, located on the campus of Brown University, has one of the world’s most significant collections relating to the history of the early Americas, particularly focused on printed books, maps and prints.
The Research Associate will work collaboratively on designated topics relevant to the library’s collections and mission, conducting research and producing both general‑audience and scholarly publications. As part of the JCB’s initiative 2026 and Beyond, the Associate will undertake directed research and produce public‑facing and scholarly work on histories and legacies of religions and freedom in the early Americas with an emphasis on the eighteenth century.
The Associate will also have the remit to make independent decisions within the broad topic area.
Start Date: July 1, 2026
Employment: Full‑time, Fixed Term, 1 year (possible renewal up to 3 years).
Funding: 100% endowment funded.
Responsibilities- Conduct original research on the history of the early Americas, focusing on the eighteenth century.
- Produce scholarly publications and general‑audience articles, books or media products.
- Collaborate with library staff and external partners on research projects.
- Prepare and manage public‑facing outputs such as talks, exhibitions, podcasts or social media content.
- Make independent decisions on research directions within the assigned topic area.
- PhD in a relevant field required before July 1, 2026.
- Experience conducting research, writing and producing publishable work.
- Knowledge of eighteenth‑century American history and issues of religion and freedom.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate on research and writing and work independently.
- Demonstrated interest in both public‑facing and academic work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong proficiency in social media platforms.
