Building Maintenance, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
SUMMARY
Under general supervision and according to established procedures, performs necessary plastering, painting, wallpaper hanging and refinishing of interior building surfaces and furnishings. - Prepares surfaces for painting by using sandpaper, wire brushes, steel wool and cleaning solvents; removes old paint by applying liquid paint removers; fills nail holes and cracks with putty and plaster; washes area and replaces broken glass throughout the complex.
- Plasters walls to repair large cracks or holes; tapes dry walls and applies compound as needed; sands, primes and paints.
- Prepares area for painting by removing furniture and fixtures, masking around areas being painted with tape and paper, and spreading drop cloths to protect flooring from paint spatters; may erect scaffolding.
- Selects premixed paints or may mix paint to desired tone by mixing and blending required portions of pigment, oil thinning and drying substances.
- Applies coats of paint, varnishes, stains, sealer, enamel lacquer, etc. to decorate and protect interior surfaces, trimmings, furniture and equipment; uses paint, brushes, rollers, trimmers, spray guns and other necessary applications equipment.
- Cleans area upon completion of painting and replaces all furniture; cleans painting equipment, brushes, etc. after painting is completed.
- Hangs vinyl wall coverings and makes repairs to vinyl materials as necessary; finishes or refinishes furniture and equipment to specified color or finish by applying paint remover and scraping it off, staining or painting, applying sealer.
- Calculates and selects quantity and type of paints, vinyl and other materials needed to complete assigned tasks; completes records of time and materials used on each job; operates graphic 4 system for making signs throughout the complex.
- Basic Knowledge:
Completion of High School or its equivalent; completion of courses in painting, plastering and paper hanging or the equivalent on-the-job experience; physical ability to carry materials throughout the hospital and to climb ladders and scaffolding; knowledge of painting techniques, uses of painting as well as basic masonry and paper techniques to ensure the finished product is decorative; knowledge of proper care and use of painter's hand and power tools. - Experience:
Requires three to five years experience which may include completion of an apprenticeship program. - Supervisory Responsibility:
