Job DescriptionBrown University Athletics and Recreation is seeking candidates for the Coaching Assistant, Men's Rugby position. Located in Providence, Rhode Island and a member of the Ivy League, our intercollegiate athletics program consists of 34 varsity teams with approximately 1,000 athletes who participate within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA-DI).
This position is an assistant coach to the head coach, coaching all positions and both 7's and 15's. The coaching assistant will primarily work with newer players who are part of the developmental team; there will also be some crossover with the first and second teams. The assistant will have good working knowledge of the Laws of Rugby Football and be capable of refereeing both team scrimmages and matches.
This is a part‑time 10‑month position scheduled to work 10 hours per week.
- High School Diploma/GED.
- 3-5 years of Rugby playing experience (at least five years preferred).
- 3-5 years of Rugby coaching experience preferred; preferably with both 15s and 7s at the collegiate level, club level, or higher.
- USA Rugby Level 200 coaching certification or higher. Will possibly consider working toward this certification.
- Technical knowledge coaching both forward play (scrum and lineout) and backline positions for 15s and 7s.
- Possess a strong understanding of the fundamental skills of rugby.
- Be able to teach these skills to players with limited to no experience.
- Provide a safe and enjoyable learning environment by which players may be able to move up and participate in the second side and possibly the more competitive group.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Rugby referee experience/registration, helpful.
- Possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.
- Criminal background check required before commencing employment.
Employees in coaching positions are required to maintain current AED/CPR and First Aid certification (certification is available at no cost through the Athletic Department).
All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check and education verification satisfactory to Brown.
All division employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations. The duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA, Ivy League rules and regulations; any violations must be reported to the compliance office and appropriate parties. Employees in coaching positions must receive annual rules education on NCAA legislation related to recruiting and maintain current AED/CPR and First Aid certification.
