Archival Processor (Part-time/28 hours per week)

Brigham Young University invites applicants for this part-time position. The role focuses on archival processing, preservation, and description to support the university’s archival collection.

Job Description

As an Archival Processor, you will follow established processing plans, assist the processing archivist, and work on organization, arrangement, and preservation of archival materials.

Responsibilities
  • Follow curators’ processing plans to support the processing archivist in housing and arranging archival materials.
  • Identify preservation issues and obstacles in processing projects.
  • Create descriptions of archival materials according to archival theory, national and departmental standards, and remediating descriptions to prepare materials for digitization.
  • Perform first‑level reviews of staff work and final reviews of student work for quality control.
  • Engage in professional growth by attending conferences, participating in trainings, and staying informed of current archival trends.
  • Mentor or supervise students pursuing careers in history, archives, and libraries.
Qualifications
  • Firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Familiarity with archival theory, arrangement, description, and preservation following national standards and best practices.
  • Proficiency in historical research, writing, grammar, editing, attention to detail, and proofreading.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, including concise summaries and interpreting handwriting and penmanship styles.
  • Verbal communication proficiency.
  • Demonstrated collegial and collaborative attitude in providing and receiving feedback.
  • Strong time‑management skills, ability to assess and improve performance, and communicate areas of weakness or inability to a supervisor.
  • Adaptability and readiness to work outside comfort zones.
  • Ability to embrace challenges.
  • Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints must hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend.
Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree (strongly preferred).
  • Experience or familiarity with archival processing.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in the archival field.

Pay

Pay Grade: 48. Typical starting pay: $20.25–$26.50 per hour.
