. This position is central to the missionaries' role to 'Invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.'
- Establishes strategic direction for Training teams within their areas of responsibilities (30%).
- Establishes short and long-term training objectives and goals.
- Establishes training metrics for effective teaching and training.
- Defines the training work for individual teams.
- Manages training personnel (30%).
- Responsible, in partnership with HR, to hire or fire employees and recommends advancement, promotion or any other change of status of employees within their reporting line.
- Interviews and hires Training Manager 1 and 2s, training coordinators, specialists, supervisors, tutors, and teachers.
- Establishes guidelines and policies for teacher selection.
- Manages selection according to established guidelines and policies.
- Is involved in classroom observation with an emphasis on feedback to teachers.
- Motivates and enriches the morale of teachers.
- Resolves problems that arise from managers, teachers, training supervisors and training coordinators.
- Meets weekly with training staff for training and coordination purposes.
- Ensures proper budget assessment and authorization of pay, including increases to training personnel.
- Ensures effectiveness of training programs and curriculum (15%).
- Works closely with Research and Evaluation personnel to ensure applicability, relevance, and effectiveness of training programs.
- Works closely with Training Managers 1 and 2 and the training coordinators to ensure effectiveness of current training programs and curriculum, as well as curriculum design.
- Continuously reviews current methodologies and explores new techniques and methods for better training.
- Is current on training methods and innovations through literature and membership in professional organizations.
- Where applicable, has direct impact on second language acquisition.
- Oversees Meetings and workshop involvement (10%).
- Ensures that weekly training meetings of training coordinator and training supervisors meet training objectives.
- Participates in workshops and retreats scheduled by the Administration.
- Oversees Seminars and tutoring (5%).
- Conducts training in the annual Mission Leaders' Seminar training, as needed.
- Conducts training in the annual International Missionary Training Center Presidents' Seminar, as needed.
- Conducts pre-field training for mission leaders.
- Keeps abreast of Linguistic information and data management (For Language Training groups) (5%).
- Reads and studies current linguistics literature (issued by TESOL, ACTFL, etc.).
- Maintains knowledge on MTC policies and procedures, especially those relating to language study.
- Reviews current texts.
- Advises on alternative texts.
- Determines design and development of new software and print materials.
- Oversees Instruction of missionaries (5%).
- Implements all instructional programs (e.g., gospel study, discussion learning and proselyting skills, including finding, teaching, goal setting, planning etc.).
- Conducts needs analysis and program assessment through weekly interviews with training coordinator, training supervisors and through statistical reports and measurements.
- Communicates and coordinates regularly with ecclesiastical personnel regarding performance progress of missionaries.
- Conducts large group instruction of missionaries.
- Manages pre-MTC language screening and instruction.
- Bachelor’s degree in education, communication, linguistics, business, public management, or related field.
- 6 years of experience in one of the above fields OR equivalent combination of both education and experience (part-time experience is to be counted – 2 years part-time equals 1 year full-time).
- Active returned Church missionary.
- Fluency in a second language (For Language Training division only).
- Experience in training, teaching, and supervision.
- Strong motivation to generate own ideas for training yet capable of adjusting to ecclesiastical and administrative direction.
- Interpersonal skills in dealing with Church leadership and organizations such as BYU. This includes the ability to develop successful working relationships with numerous people in a wide variety of settings.
- Broad understanding of Church-wide missionary training.
- Ability to accurately and simply teach the doctrines of the Church from the scriptures.
- Abreast of current training methodologies regarding curriculum design, learning strategies, computerized language learning, and listening comprehension skills.
- Abreast of current management philosophies regarding program assessment, budget design, program and material implementation, and needs analysis.
- In depth understanding of language evaluation techniques and task-based language learning.
