Job DescriptionThe Site and Landscape Construction Manager leads and develops a high‑performing team grounded in BYU Physical Facilities mission, vision, and values. This role includes fostering a culture of faith in Jesus Christ, safety, exceptional service, accountability, personal growth, and alignment with the aims of a BYU education. The manager sets expectations, mentors supervisors and staff, and ensures all team members are trained, supported, and equipped to excel.
The manager provides strategic and operational leadership for the Site and Landscape Construction Department within BYU Grounds, overseeing landscape construction, hard surface maintenance, irrigation services, sewer and drain systems, heavy equipment operation, new construction, and repair/maintenance projects across campus. Responsibilities also include co‑managing campus‑wide snow removal operations, coordinating emergency callouts, and ensuring department activities reflect the university’s commitment to creating an inspiring, safe, and well‑maintained campus environment.
You’ll Do In This Position
- Leadership & Department Management
- Lead by positive example to promote a culture that strengthens student experience, safety, inclusion, teamwork, continuous improvement, and service‑centered leadership aligned with BYU values.
- Mentor and develop supervisors and staff, building a positive culture with clear performance expectations, timely feedback, accountability, and professional growth.
- With approval from upper management, structure the organization to fulfill university objectives with efficiency, safety, and excellence.
- Set assignment areas and manage distribution of special assignments.
- Conduct staff meetings that reinforce teamwork, employee value, communication, accountability, safety, and the aims of BYU education.
- Manage the department’s budget and purchasing, including regular financial analysis, coordination with Physical Facilities, purchasing, travel, suppliers, dealers, contractors, and Grounds office staff.
- Be fiscally responsible for efficient use of resources.
- Oversee Capital Needs Analysis requests and procurement of materials, supplies, projects, and equipment.
- Approve labor time entries of direct reports and ensure supervisors do the same.
- Ensure comprehensive and ongoing safety training and adherence to safety standards.
- Establish and manage on‑call schedules, including whole‑department support in snow removal operations.
- Irrigation
- Oversee and assist the Irrigation Shop.
- Coordinate with architects, contractors, and project managers to obtain construction documents and provide updates to the shop.
- Monitor project budgets for shop compliance within limits.
- Authorize purchasing of materials and supplies and oversee purchase orders and invoicing.
- Encourage and support continuing education and training for professional development.
- Landscape Construction
- Oversee and assist Landscape Construction Shop.
- Coordinate with architects, contractors, and project managers for construction documents and updates.
- Monitor project budgets for shop compliance.
- Authorize purchasing of materials and supplies and oversee purchase orders and invoicing.
- Verify plant schedules with architects, oversee plant material purchasing, and ensure hardscape material and site furnishing procurement.
