Job Description

The University Attending Veterinarian – Associate Director of the Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) oversees the LARC program within the vivarium facilities at BYU, while also performing full veterinary care for all laboratory animals used in teaching or research. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with federal regulations and fostering a high‑standard program of animal welfare and care.

What You Will Be Doing In This Position Animal Care and Welfare
  • Provide clinical and preventative care for all animals used in research, testing, teaching, and production.
  • Maintain the highest standards of animal care and ethics, including pain management, euthanasia, preventive medicine, health surveillance, anesthesia, and housing oversight.
  • Collaborate with research teams to make critical decisions regarding animal health and welfare.
  • Deliver timely emergency veterinary care, including work hours, weekends, and holidays.
Supervising and Training
  • Certify research personnel performing surgical procedures in aseptic techniques and surgical competency.
  • Provide appropriate resources and oversight to manage the overall veterinary care program.
  • Ensure understanding of all laboratory animal care regulations; distribute and enforce federal guidelines.
  • Offer training and expertise for evaluating species health and well‑being in context of institutional research.
  • Educate animal care staff on recognizing potential adverse clinical complications.
IACUC Involvement
  • Serve as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
  • Advise principal investigators on IACUC proposal compliance and study removal criteria.
  • Participate in protocol reviews and classify surgical procedures.
  • Accompany the USDA Veterinarian during facility inspections.
  • Complete all required state and federal certifications and reports.
Minimum Education /Experience Required
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed DVM;
    Utah license required within one year of employment.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations governing laboratory animals.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience in a veterinary or animal‑care setting.
Required Skills, Abilities, Knowledge, Licenses, Certifications
  • Current knowledge of laboratory animal medicine.
  • Strong collaborative, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Management skills for hiring, training, and supervising staff.
  • DEA license and USDA accreditation.
Preferred
  • Knowledge of national and international rules for laboratory animal care.
  • Experience in preventive medicine programs across species, including exotic animals.
  • Experience with animal research regulations and facility operations.

Typical Starting Pay

$110,000 – $142,500 per year
