About the Position

This role is responsible for assisting nursing staff with clinical direction and supervision, quality assurance and performance improvement activities, ensuring compliance across all areas, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. The Nurse II will facilitate groups, implement nursing standards of care throughout the nursing process, and oversee the delivery of services within a 24‑hour behavioral health acute care facility.

Clinical Direction
  • Provide direction and clinical supervision to all nursing staff on the assigned unit in collaboration with the Lead Nurse.
  • Assist in coordinating staffing schedules by using acuity knowledge and pool staffing to maximize quality of care.
  • Communicate personnel needs to the Lead Nurse immediately.
  • Ensure all nursing services on the unit are delivered correctly and in compliance with CMHHIP policies and nursing standards.
  • Complete nursing assignments and duties in accordance with CMHHIP policies, psychiatric and medical nursing standards, licensure requirements, and governing bodies.
  • Notify staff promptly of changes to processes, policies, and procedures through Cornerstone Rosters, meetings, email, and individual contact.
  • Conduct regular individual coaching sessions with assigned staff.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines, department leadership, and nursing directives.
  • Interpret leadership communications to understand changes that may impact the nursing department.
Department Standards
  • Maintain nursing standards of care for the assigned shift by creating and sustaining processes for communication and follow‑up with staff.
  • Ensure nursing staff adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct and CMHHIP Code of Ethics.
  • Maintain current knowledge of new policies, standards, and literature related to nursing and specialty areas and communicate them to subordinates.
  • Notify supervisors promptly of issues on the unit involving patients and nursing staff members.
  • Work collaboratively with all departments and provide assistance when needed.
  • Guide and direct daily cross‑shift reports, direct nursing care, and communication to shift personnel.
  • Guarantee the unit is directed and staffed appropriately and staffing levels remain accurate.
Staff Development / Competencies
  • Implement actions to maximize the productivity of assigned nursing personnel through mentoring, training, leadership, and feedback.
  • Maintain performance plans and provide clear expectations regarding job duties and required competencies.
  • Administer in‑service training and maintain an educational profile for each staff member.
  • Ensure staff proficiency with electronic systems (BEHR, Cornerstone) and mandatory training.
  • Promote staff development and training by supporting compliance with mandatory training across the hospital.
Patient Care / Nursing Care
  • Ensure nursing care is delivered on the assigned shift and maintain a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment.
  • Respond promptly to patient psychiatric or medical issues, participate in Trauma Informed Care initiatives, and audit nursing care.
  • Follow proper documentation for seclusion, restraint monitoring, respiratory services, oxygen equipment, laboratory services, and AED data.
  • Verify patient identification before medication or intervention administration.
  • Maintain infection control standards and regulations.
  • Audit and revise nursing care plans based on nursing history.
  • Apply patient rights and comply with mental health legal policies.
  • Provide interventions in critical situations as needed.
  • Educate patients on medications, care needs, and family during care plans and group therapies.
Other Duties as Assigned
  • Perform any other duties necessary for the shift, unit, or department.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the position.
  • Appropriate education may substitute for up to two (2) years of required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
