About the work unit The work unit exists to provide skilled nursing support and services on a 24hr/7 days per week basis to developmentally and/or intellectually disabled individuals with complex medical and/or behavioral needs. This includes acute and chronic care to individuals that reside in Waiver licensed homes throughout the Pueblo area. The purpose of the Regional Centers is to serve the hardest‑to‑serve Developmentally/Intellectually Disabled individuals in the state.

About

the Position

This position is responsible for overseeing all medications for individuals residing under the HCBS Waiver license at the Pueblo Regional Center (PRC). The role provides oversight for all ordering and inventory of over‑the‑counter medications, advises nurses after hours, ensures reporting of acute medical occurrences, monitors compliance, and manages medication administration by Licensed Psychiatric Technicians and Health Care Technician/QMAP. The position also serves as a unit supervisor, coordinating shift responsibilities, supervising nurses, and performing performance planning and reviews.

Primary

Job Duties
  • Supervision of nurses and coordination of shift responsibilities in collaboration with nursing leadership.
  • Ensuring nursing assignments, assessments, and documentation meet agency procedures and regulatory guidelines.
  • Performing direct supervision of unit nurses, including signature authority and performance‑management planning.
  • Providing on‑call support for vacant shifts and communicating with night‑shift personnel.
  • Assisting nursing leadership with regulatory compliance and nursing services across all shifts.
  • Observing clinical practice and documenting critical thinking skills and nursing process adherence.
  • Acting as a resource person for nurses on duty and interdisciplinary staff regarding client medical care and policies.
  • Notifying all relevant parties of acute medical occurrences on the unit.
QAPI & Nursing Trackers
  • Direct and coordinate the reporting of statistical and quality assurance data.
  • Develop performance‑measurement tools and lead quality‑improvement initiatives.
  • Respond to nursing leadership on performance issues.
  • Ensure nursing participation in interdisciplinary QAPI activities.
  • Audit nursing documentation forms and monitor staff deficiencies.
  • Conduct quality‑control checks and audits of nursing records.
Medication Administration Record (MAR) Management
  • Ensure accuracy and quality control of MARs in the electronic medical record system.
  • Track, manage, follow‑up, and document medication errors.
  • Assist nursing with competency evaluations and quarterly checks.
  • Maintain paper backup MARs for individuals and ensure monthly distribution.
  • Audit written orders for transcription accuracy and compliance with physician orders.
Prescription and Medication Distribution Management
  • Oversee OTC medications and prescription medications for individuals in licensed homes.
  • Support night nurses on inventory par levels for pharmacy medications.
  • Manage ordering, inventory, reordering, and refilling processes.
  • Verify shipment accuracy and reconcile manifests with the approved vendor.
  • Document physician orders and manage drug‑interaction communication.
  • Maintain a clean, organized medication distribution area and monitor refrigerator temperature.
  • Provide DEA medication oversight and ensure compliance with federal, state, and agency policies.
Other Duties as Assigned
  • Maintain staff competencies and regulatory compliance.
  • Prioritize communication with the Director of Nursing and Assistant Director of Nursing, including 1:1 meetings.
  • Facilitate team relationships and assist within the nurse practice act.
  • Serve as a backup resource for nursing staff.
  • Drive to appointments and living areas as needed, using state vehicles with mileage reimbursement where applicable.
Education / Licensure / Certification / Experience
