About the Work Unit
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation Forensic Services (CBIFS) maintains four operational forensic science laboratories throughout the state:
Denver, Pueblo, Grand Junction and Greeley. Forensic Services is responsible for the scientific analysis of physical evidence collected from crime scenes. The role of our scientists is to evaluate and examine the evidence using the latest state‑of‑the‑art techniques, and objectively testify for the prosecution or defense for the federal, state and local law enforcement agencies that we serve.
Work Environment
- Typical work hours:
Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. - Primary work will be out of an office in Pueblo. Majority in‑person position.
About The Job
The trainee position is accountable for learning all aspects of safety, processes, operations, procedures, techniques, rules and regulations for the preservation, analysis and interpretation of physical evidence. The Forensic Scientist I must learn and perform all technical and administrative aspects of the work at the highest level of quality, ensuring the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 are met.
- Technical aspects: proper handling and secure storage of evidence, chain of custody requirements, laboratory safety, and all facets of casework.
- Administrative aspects: evidence tracking, entering complete documentation into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and accurate, factual and timely report writing.
Key Responsibilities
- Discipline‑specific training and competency testing.
- Mentored casework under supervision.
- Consult with Forensic Scientist II & III for guidance and to resolve customer service scenarios.
- Act as liaison with law‑enforcement partners and consistently provide high‑level customer service.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training.
Professional Development & Other Duties
- Stay current with discipline knowledge and attend training conferences, seminars and courses.
- Produce and share learning synopses in meetings.
- Recommend policy or procedure updates as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in biology, chemistry, or other natural science field.
