Job DescriptionProvides strategic direction and oversight for the university’s safety and security, including emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation programs. Leads campus public safety functions to ensure a safe learning and working environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Develops and implements procedures, training programs, and community engagement initiatives that promote safety, compliance, and emergency readiness.
Responsibilities- Daily operational leadership of the Campus Safety & Security Office, aligning mission, goals, and performance metrics with university objectives.
- Schedules campus safety officers and serves as primary Incident Commander during emergency response.
- Enforces campus policies and maintains compliance with all relevant safety, security, and emergency management regulations.
- Co‑ordinates with local law enforcement, first responders, and emergency management partners; shares crime statistics and data with appropriate agencies.
- Conducts routine safety audits, inspections, drills, and tabletop exercises; assists in planning for special events and athletic activities.
- Oversees campus security systems—cameras, alarms, access control, , and key control.
- Manages campus parking enforcement and ensures clear communication with senior leadership.
- Serves as the campus subject‑matter expert for campus safety and emergency management; manages the campus emergency alert system and issues alerts as needed.
- Prepares key compliance documents, including the Annual Security & Fire Safety Report (ASSR) and Clery, TIBRS, and other emergency management reports.
- Develops, implements, and maintains the Campus Continuity Plan.
- Prepares budget justifications, reviews and creates policies related to safety, security, and emergency management.
- Identifies training needs, develops programs for departments and the broader university community, and establishes departmental goals.
- Hires, assigns, and engages personnel; maintains the Campus Safety & Security website to provide accurate, accessible information.
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience working in or leading a public safety/security office.
- Master’s Degree.
- Five years of experience leading a public safety/security office or command position at a law‑enforcement agency.
- Training in and experience with NIMS and the creation of emergency management protocols.
- Experience working with stakeholders in a rural environment.
Located in southern middle Tennessee, UT Southern is about 70 miles south of Nashville and 40 miles north of Huntsville, Alabama.
The campus is nestled in the small community of Pulaski and currently enrolls about 800 students a year. UT Southern is the newest campus to join the UT System, evolving from UT’s acquisition of Martin Methodist College in 2021.
