The Institute for Shock Physics (ISP) provides an opportunity for undergraduate students who want to participate in a 10-week, multidisciplinary Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) studying “Materials under Extreme Conditions”.
Students undertake state-of-the-art research projects and attend seminars, including those presented by scientists from Department of Energy National Laboratories (Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, and Sandia).
Program GoalsThe SURE program goal is to provide undergraduate students in Physical Sciences and Engineering the opportunity to perform hands-on experiments in a world class research organization. Students have the opportunity to undertake experimental investigations of condensed matter phenomena at extreme conditions.
Summer School Topics & Opportunities- Basic shock wave physics and wave propagation
- Impact experiment design and analysis
- Sample metrology and characterization
- General laboratory safety and conduct of operations
- Hands-on experimental work
- Attend external seminars given by leading experts
Students from a range of disciplines including Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Geo/Planetary Science can benefit from this exciting curriculum.
