The City of Pullman is hiring Transit Drivers to operate buses and paratransit vehicles, ensuring passenger safety and comfort over assigned routes. No prior transit experience is required; paid training is provided. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, able to wear a uniform, and maintain a neat appearance.
Responsibilities- Check fluids, tires, and perform pre‑trip inspections.
- Operate buses or vans on routes, pick up and discharge passengers, collect fares, verify passes, and use handheld units.
- Operate wheelchair lifts, regulate heating/cooling systems, and ensure passenger comfort.
- Promote positive passenger relations, greet passengers, provide route information, and collect surveys.
- Report incidents, hazards, and accidents to the dispatcher.
- Assist with cleaning of vehicles, use power washer, sweep, empty waste baskets, answer telephone.
- Operate two‑way radio, make ADA stop calls, and perform hourly walk‑throughs.
- Attend training sessions and maintain a regular presence.
- Interact professionally with city staff and the public.
- Self‑motivation and willingness to do a good job.
- Operate vehicle safely while observing passengers.
- Complete initial classroom and field training.
- Operate large passenger bus and paratransit van independently in all weather.
- Deal with public politely and remain calm under pressure.
- Maintain effective relationships with supervisors and colleagues.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Demonstrate excellent driving skills.
- Complete a first aid class and apply training to passengers.
- Accurately maintain ride, fare, transfer, defect, and schedule records.
- Provide quality services cost‑effectively and suggest improvements.
- Show sensitivity to diverse groups.
- Work varying hours, including early morning, late evening, weekends.
- Pass drug screen, background check, and transit orientation people‑skill test.
- Physically perform essential functions and possess a valid driver’s license with an abstract of driving record.
- Ability to obtain a Class B commercial driver license (air‑brake restriction removed).
