Auditor - Internal Audit Team

Join Sompo as an Internal Auditor in our Internal Audit team, focused on North American insurance operations. This role provides independent and objective analysis by participating in internal audits across North America, Bermuda, and Canada.

Location: Purchase, NY or Morristown, NJ. Office-based with a collaborative environment that supports career growth.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the execution of the internal audit plan, participating in operational, financial, and regulatory audits.
  • Prepare, maintain, and update work papers in Team Mate, ensuring high quality and compliance with Internal Audit Professional Practices standards.
  • Test processes, controls, and transactions to ensure compliance with company policies and regulations.
  • Assist with financial controls testing and audit lead in developing actionable recommendations to improve operations and governance.
  • Communicate audit observations, internal control deficiencies, and recommendations with management.
  • Prepare clear and concise written audit observations for reporting.
  • Collaborate with internal audit team members in other office locations on group-wide audits as required.
  • Build strong relationships with business units and operational areas to promote a robust internal control environment.
  • Monitor and follow up on management action plans addressing audit observations.
  • Validate implementation of action plans by reviewing and examining evidence provided by business units.
  • Participate in ongoing training to enhance auditing, risk assessment, and insurance industry knowledge.
  • Stay updated on regulatory and industry changes that may impact the business.
  • Participate in department data analytics initiatives and work with leaders to facilitate continuous monitoring.
  • Apply auditor judgment and professional scepticism in decision-making.
  • Perform additional assignments or ad‑hoc tasks as directed, completing activities within established timelines.
What You’ll Bring
  • 1–3 years of internal or external audit experience, internship, or coursework in auditing, accounting, financial analysis, or risk management.
  • Basic understanding of auditing principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with financial controls and risk assessment processes.
  • Experience with SOX 404 and financial control testing is a plus.
  • Collaborative team player who builds strong working relationships with management.
  • Critical thinker who identifies exposures, analyzes concerns, and develops solutions.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical, problem‑solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to negotiate and present audit results to all levels of management.
  • Time‑management skills to handle multiple tasks.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of artificial intelligence tools is a plus.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges.
  • Additional language skills (Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese) desirable but not required.
  • BS or BA in Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field.
  • CIA or CPA preferred; progress toward industry‑relevant qualifications considered.
  • Up to 15% travel to other Sompo office locations.
Salary Range

$75,000 – $95,000. Actual compensation depends on location, qualifications, and experience.
