Puyallup School District is considering qualified applicants to sponsor in obtaining a Washington State Emergency Substitute Certificate. Qualified applicants must have the skills, abilities, and willingness to provide instructional teaching support to our district's schools/departments. Emergency Substitute Teachers provide coverage for absent teachers throughout the district.
Position Hours/Days: At-Will/On-call, based on the 2025-26 SY Calendar
Position Rate of Pay:
- Full Day Rate (greater than 3.75 hrs) = $196.66
- Half Day Rate (less than 3.75 hrs) = $98.33

Difference between Emergency and Regular Substitute Teachers:
- Emergency Substitute Teacher: does not currently have a WA State Teaching certificate; typically 'career-changers' exploring teaching but without completed certification.
- Regular Substitute Teacher: has completed a teacher preparation program and obtained a Washington State Teaching Certificate. If you already have a certificate and want to be a Substitute Teacher, apply for the regular substitute posting instead.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university (verifiable via unofficial transcripts). Documentation MUST be uploaded.
- Experience working with children in an instructional capacity.
- Ability and desire to work at least twice a month.
Clearances: Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance
Other Information:
- This position is screened and hired by the Substitute Services Office at Sub Services.
- Selected applicants will be contacted by Human Resources and must complete the onboarding process, including:
- Onboarding paperwork
- Official college transcripts (BA minimum) sent directly from the college/university
- Online orientation
- Onboarding appointment (including fingerprint scanning)
