The City of Puyallup is hiring for a Facilities Specialist, with a primary focus on HVAC systems. This is an open continuous posting with a priority application date of December 18th. We anticipate our new employee starting mid‑January, 2026.

The successful candidate will perform specialized technical work within the City's Facilities Division. Duties mainly focus on the skilled day‑to‑day operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of the operating systems of City Facilities, which include HVAC, boilers, electrical, plumbing and security systems. The employee should be skilled in operating computerized HVAC monitoring systems and be able to perform HVAC troubleshooting and repairs at the Journey skill level.

Other duties consist of facilities maintenance and operations tasks as needed.

  • Operate, maintain and repair building operating systems design, specify, estimate costs, modify, purchase, install and monitor the various building operating systems.
  • Work with architects, manufacturers and contractors to perform all necessary related work.
  • Coordinate and design renovations, modifications and installations of new and existing buildings systems.
  • Schedule and coordinate preventative maintenance programs for HVAC units and perform filter changes and repairs.
Knowledge of:
  • Building, electrical and plumbing codes
  • Computers and associated software
  • Proper construction practices
  • Products, materials, equipment and tools related to the industry
  • Reading and interpreting building and building component plans and specifications
  • Journey level knowledge of maintenance and repair of equipment including HVAC, electrical, boilers, refrigeration, plumbing and mechanical controls
  • Lock/Key and Security Systems
  • Safety regulations and first aid procedures
Ability to:
  • Operate a computer and associated applications programs
  • Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and diagnostic duties
  • Install HVAC, plumbing and electrical components
  • Plan, design, construct and coordinate small construction projects
  • Operate equipment (vehicles, power and hand tools) in a safe manner
  • Read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans or schematics
  • Plan, prioritize and organize work
  • Understand and follow complicated oral and written instructions
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Education and Experience

High school graduate (or GED) and completion of a trade school, plus three or more years of journey‑level maintenance experience in the following building trades areas: HVAC, electrical, plumbing and mechanical (at least two years of this experience must be HVAC). If more than one year of full‑time Voc‑Tech training or college‑level technical coursework in the above areas has been completed, it may be substituted for up to one year of the work experience requirements.

Qualifications Qualifications required

Possession of or the ability to obtain, and maintain throughout employment, a Washington State driver's license.

Qualifications desired:

EPA Certification, North American Technician Excellence (NATE) certification, Tacoma/Pierce County or Seattle Boiler’s License 4th grade, and Washington State 06A Electrical license.
