DescriptionApplications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The FBI CIRG consists of special agents and support personnel specializing in crisis management, hostage rescue, surveillance, hazardous devices mitigation, crisis negotiations, behavioral analysis, and tactical operations. CIRG also conducts applied social and behavioral research to support its operations. This ORISE fellowship supports the research team.
What will I be doing?As a research fellow in the CIRG Visiting Scientist Program (VSP), you will enhance your professional development by participating in research initiatives under mentorship. You will work in a high-security government facility and perform research related to law enforcement and national security, including:
- Conducting literature searches
- Designing social/behavioral research projects
- Analyzing data statistically
- Presenting research findings orally and in writing
You will support applied social/behavioral research on criminal, national security, or cyber threats, evaluate research results, perform statistical analyses, and prepare manuscripts for FBI review and publication. Information acquired during participation is at the FBI's discretion.

Participant BenefitsYou will receive a stipend supporting living and other expenses. The initial appointment is one year, renewable up to four additional years based on performance and funding.
Note:
Short-term or summer-only appointments are not available. The appointment is full-time during FBI business hours. This opportunity is open to U.S. citizens.
You will not establish an employment relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, FBI, or CIRG. Your affiliation is through ORISE for appointment administration.
QualificationsEligibility criteria include:
- U.S. citizenship
- Recent graduates within the last 5 years with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in an eligible scientific field, or current students who will complete their degree within one year of the start date
- Successful completion of an FBI background check and suitability assessment
Applicants with experience in social/behavioral sciences and data analysis are encouraged to apply.
