Description

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Counter terrorism and Forensic Science Research Unit’s (CFSRU) provides technical leadership for the FBI and other law enforcement agencies through applied research and development.

What will I be doing?

This project involves developing extraction and instrumental methods for analyzing residues from detonators (primary explosives) used in criminal cases. Techniques include solvent extraction, elemental assays for heavy metals, ion and liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Previous experience with ion chromatography, Thermo Electron Orbitrap mass spectrometers, and liquid chromatography is highly desired.

As a participant in the CFSRU Visiting Scientist Program (VSP), you will enhance your research capabilities by working with state-of-the-art equipment under mentorship, in a high-security government facility, focusing on forensic research relevant to law enforcement and national security.

You May Be Involved In Research Including

• Detection of explosives
• Characterization and comparison of forensic materials
• Mass spectrometry applications
• Development of instrumental methods in chromatography

Under mentorship, your tasks may include literature searches, designing experiments, conducting field tests, laboratory analyses, data analysis, and presenting findings orally and in writing.

Participant Benefits

Qualifications

Eligibility: U.S. citizenship, recent (within 5 years) Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD, or expected completion by start date, with relevant academic/professional experience in analytical chemistry or related fields, seeking to expand expertise in forensic science. Must pass FBI background check.
