The Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is an international conservation organization founded in 1948 to conserve and restore wild Atlantic salmon and their ecosystems. OverviewThe Managing Editor is a member of ASF’s Communications and Marketing team. The Managing Editor leads production of ASF’s quarterly magazine, the Atlantic Salmon Journal, and ASF’s blog, Rivernotes. Duties include managing editorial processes, production, distribution, administration, freelancer relationships, advertising, and design. By delivering timely coverage of topics related to ASF’s work and interests, the Managing Editor helps advance ASF’s mission.
Responsibilitiesand Duties
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Leading the production and publication of the Atlantic Salmon Journal and Rivernotes,
- Commissioning, editing, and writinghigh-quality articles, field reports, social media posts, and other content,
- Ensuring accuracy by working closely with ASF scientists, program, and communications staff,
- Managing contributor assignments, contracts, deadlines, and feedback,
- Overseeing production workflows from concept through layout, proofing, and final publication,
- Producing visual materials including photographs and videos,
- Developing digital content for web and social channels,
- Maintaining Canadian Press style guide standards in the Atlantic Salmon Journal and Rivernotes,
- Using audience insights and analytics to refine content strategy and strengthen ASF’s reach.
The Managing Editor must be an experienced content producer with a strong understanding of journalistic standards and practices. Success requires intuition, networking skills, research abilities, and strong time management. The ideal candidate requires emotional and intellectual intelligence, a track record in related endeavours, and technological competency with cameras and editing software.
Education and Experience:An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Education: Post-secondary education in journalism or related field.
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in a related field.
ASF offers a competitive salary and benefits package including RRSP contributions, vacation pay, sick leave, and health/dental insurance. The salary range for the position is $64,000 – 96,000. Starting salary will be determined based on qualifications of the successful candidate.
