Summary of Function

The Community‑Based Researcher and Project Leader will lead community‑driven research, knowledge building, engagement, communications, and project coordination for priority initiatives of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government (LMG). Working within the Executive Office, the Community‑Based Researcher and Project Leader will take a lead role in advancing initiatives that support Mi’gmaw governance, law development, land stewardship, community awareness, and meaningful community participation.

Job Duties
  • Lead community‑based research activities, including literature reviews, document review, interviews, focus groups, surveys, and analysis.
  • Gather, organize, synthesize, and summarize information from community members, knowledge holders, technical advisors, consultants, and other relevant sources.
  • Lead the development and review of governance, law‑making, land‑based, and stewardship‑related materials, reports, frameworks, guidelines, and communications, in collaboration with relevant staff, advisors, and partners.
  • Prepare and guide the development of clear written summaries, briefing materials, reports, and other knowledge products that inform decision‑making and strengthen community understanding.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate community engagement activities, including meetings, workshops, focus groups, interviews, information sessions, and awareness activities.
  • Lead meaningful participation processes by preparing engagement materials, gathering feedback, documenting input, and helping ensure community perspectives are reflected in project outcomes.
  • Work respectfully with Elders, knowledge holders, community members, staff, consultants, advisory bodies, and external partners.
  • Develop accessible communication pieces, updates, surveys, postings, and presentation materials to support community awareness and participation.
  • Lead the coordination of priority initiatives by developing workplans, tracking milestones, organizing meetings, coordinating contributors, and ensuring activities move forward in a timely and coordinated manner.
  • Monitor progress, identify emerging needs or issues, and provide regular updates to the Senior Researcher and relevant project teams.
  • Lead and advance land‑based, governance, stewardship, and community awareness initiatives through research, coordination, communications, and engagement activities as required.
  • Perform other related research, facilitation, communications, coordination, and administrative duties within the Executive Office as assigned.

Requirements
  • Post‑secondary education or demonstrated experience in research, Indigenous studies, governance, environmental studies, social sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience conducting community‑based research, interviews, focus groups, and literature reviews.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and facilitation.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple project streams, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship‑building skills, particularly within Mi’gmaq and Indigenous community contexts.
  • Knowledge of Mi’gmaw governance, law, culture, or land‑based initiatives is a strong asset.
  • Proficiency in or knowledge of the Mi’gmaw language is considered an asset.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background/Vulnerable Sector check.
