Software Development Manager, AI Powered Search

Clio is the global leader in legal AI technology, empowering legal professionals and law firms of every size to work smarter, faster, and more securely. We are seeking a Software Development Manager to join our Engineering team. This role is available to candidates across Canada, excluding Quebec. If you are local to one of our hubs (Burnaby, Calgary, or Toronto) you will be expected to be in office minimum twice per week on one of our Anchor Days.

One of the teams we are hiring a Software Development Manager for is the AI-powered Search Team
. This team is a part of the AI Platform organization, responsible for building AI powered products that transform how legal professionals work. At Clio, we design, develop, and ship intelligent tools—like AI Teammates—that automate the work for you, simplify workflows, and unlock new value for our customers. We focus on delivering secure, trustworthy, and innovative AI solutions at scale.
- Collaborating with your triad to understand business challenges, identify impactful opportunities, and craft a roadmap for the team.
- Designing technical architectures and solutions with the team.
- Providing feedback on code reviews, architecture documents, and other artifacts to help team members make strong technical decisions.
- Actively participating as a contributor to the project through code reviews or shipping code.
- Holding 1:1s with direct reports to support career growth and development goals.
- Participating in hiring to grow the engineering team at Clio.
- Reviewing code contributed by team members or other Clio developers and sharing expertise on preferred technologies or patterns.
- Demonstrated success in people leadership in software development, particularly with large scale SaaS products.
- A strong background in hands-on software development.
- Diverse knowledge to help the team solve complex technical problems.
- The ability to describe successful projects and lessons learned from less successful ones.
- Experience hiring and coaching engineering talent in a fast-paced environment; energized by both personal technical work and contributing to the team’s growth.
- Strong opinions that are respectfully held, and the ability to foster that attitude in others.
- Commitment to providing honest, actionable feedback and encouraging reciprocal feedback.
- Ability to devise roadmaps while remaining adaptable in a changing environment.
- Growth mindset toward process improvement and new technologies, especially AI.
- Experience with implementing large scale search systems.
- A philosophy on what makes for great software development teams.
- Experience with CRM products at scale.
- Experience with Ruby on Rails.

The expected salary range for this role is $176,000 to $264,000 CAD, with regional variations by geography. Final offer reflects location, experience, and skillset.
