Are you ready to make a lasting impact on literacy? At Really Great Reading, we are building a bright, diverse, and passionate team dedicated to leading the industry in improving literacy scores nationwide. With nearly two decades of leadership bringing the Science of Reading to thousands of schools, we design innovative products, training, and materials that transform how educators teach and how students learn.
Here, we empower our team with the tools, support, and professional growth opportunities they need to thrive in a collaborative, forward-thinking environment—where your work truly makes a difference.
Really Great Reading is building a next-generation platform that will launch soon! In the meantime, we have assembled a dedicated, highly agile engineering team—a Tech Lead, a Dev Ops engineer, and two developers—to ensure the absolute stability, security, and continued evolution of our current RGR application.
As the Tech Lead, you will split your time equally between hands-on full-stack development and technical leadership. You will serve as the primary operational manager for your team of three, collaborating closely with our SVP, Engineering (who will partner with you on high-level department strategy, career development, and hiring approvals). As needed, you will also act as the technical bridge, collaborating with the engineering team building our next-generation platform.
This role is a perfect fit for a pragmatic, empathetic player-coach who thrives on technical ownership, excels at mentoring developers, and communicates with exceptional clarity in a fully remote, asynchronous environment.
What You’ll Do Support & Lead the TeamLead a dedicated team of three (a Dev Ops engineer and two developers), fostering professional growth, and partnering with the SVP, Engineering on performance reviews and talent acquisition.
Set clear sprint priorities, distribute tasks effectively, and maintain rigorous engineering practices (high-quality code reviews, CI/CD standards, and robust incident management processes).
Act as the primary technical liaison for the current application, helping the team resolve blockers and growing them into a highly autonomous, high-performing unit
Support & Evolve the RGR ApplicationEnsure the high availability, performance, and security of our current application stack (Django/Python, React/Type Script, and AWS) through the upcoming platform launch.
Own application support, active incident response, and prompt, root-cause resolution of production issues.
Pragmatically maintain and evolve the existing codebase, refactoring critical bottlenecks while thoroughly documenting legacy systems to prevent knowledge silos.
Contribute to the New Platform (As Needed)Partner with the new platform development team to assist with technical transition points and align feature roadmaps.
Participate in key deployments, schema changes, and complex data migrations to ensure 100% service continuity for our educators and students.
Contribute clean, production-quality code, pipeline improvements, and modern architectural standards to the emerging ecosystem.
What You Bring Requirements- 5–7 years of full-stack software development experience, with at least 2+ years of experience formally leading, mentoring, or managing other engineers

- Experience building or maintaining modern CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Git Hub Actions).
- Comfort with asynchronous and real-time architectures (Kafka, RabbitMQ, Web Sockets, Redis).
